UK Government Responds to EAC Review, Clarifies Positions on Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

Flag UK10 February 2015: The UK Government published a response to the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee's (EAC) report on recommended actions and support for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In its responses, the Government explains and reiterates its position on the proposed SDGs, also addressing: natural capital accounts; climate change and the SDGs; energy subsidies; poverty and trade; air pollution; resource efficiency and the circular economy; forest indicators; biodiversity funding and support for marine protected areas (MPAs); and education and youth engagement in the SDGs.

Switzerland Submits First INDC, Aims to Reduce Emissions 50% by 2030 [viewed]

flag switzerland27 February 2015: The Government of Switzerland has become the first party to the UNFCCC to announce its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC). The INDC states that the country will reduce emissions 50% below 1990 levels by 2030, with 30% of those reductions achieved within its borders. The remaining reductions may be attained via projects completed abroad, according to the contribution.

IDB, the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and the World Bank launched publications on, inter alia, climate resilience, green growth and carbon pricing, and reported on a regional event in Asia.

UNEP Seeks Comments on Access-to-Information Policy [viewed]

UNEP25 February 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is requesting comments on its Access-to-Information-Policy, which contains the principles and procedures governing access to information at UNEP. The policy was issued on 6 June 2014, and is currently in a pilot phase. According to UNEP, it seeks to make accessible the information concerning UNEP's work and the information it generates, in a manner consistent with the relevant policies and practices of the UN Secretariat.

CBD Secretariat Calls for Input on New and Emerging Issues, Climate Change-Related Matters [viewed]

CBD17 February 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued a series of notifications calling for views and information on new and emerging issues to be considered by the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), the potential impacts of geoengineering on biodiversity, and other climate change-related activities, including experiences with ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

UK Allocates £40 Million to BioCarbon Fund [viewed]

Worldbanklogo27 January 2015: The Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) announced a contribution of £40 million to the World Bank administered BioCarbon Fund (BCF). The funding will support the BCF Initiative on Sustainable Forest Landscapes (ISFL) in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from land use, deforestation and forest degradation.

Report Examines Early Lessons from Jurisdictional REDD+ [viewed]

fcpf_wbJanuary 2015: The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) completed an analysis of experiences in jurisdictional REDD+; that is REDD+ programmes implemented at the sub-national level rather than on a project-by-project basis. Overall, the report notes that a jurisdictional approach to REDD+ can work effectively across land types and engage a broad range of stakeholders, however working at such a large scale often presents significant challenges in terms of mobilizing technical and human capacity.

FAO6 February 2015: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) released the twenty-sixth edition of InFO News, which highlights expectations for international decisions supporting forests and forestry including through the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the negotiation of a new climate agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

UN-REDD Newsletter Focuses on Capacity Building [viewed]
