16 November 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a report on national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory data for the period 1990-2010 for all 42 Annex I Parties (FCCC/SBI/2012/31). It highlights that total aggregate GHG emissions excluding land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) decreased by 8.9%, and including LULUCF decreased by 14.6%.

15 November 2012: The UN University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) has published a policy brief titled “Securing the Future of Mangroves.” The brief is based on the World Atlas of Mangroves and describes both the current status of mangroves, including their economic value, as well as threats to mangrove ecosystems and considerations for good management practices.

15 October 2012: The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) published the “State of the Nile River Basin Report 2012,” which highlights the fragile aquatic ecosystems of the Basin. The report notes the importance of the Nile for migratory birds and describes issues related to agricultural water use, power generation, navigation and climate change impacts on the basin.

The report is based on information contained in national communications from Parties and other sources for consideration by the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice at its 37th session (SBSTA 37).

9 November 2012: Australia's Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Greg Combet, has announced that Australia is ready to join a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. UN General-Secretary Ban Ki-moon commended Australia for expressing readiness to join a second commitment period, and called on all governments to take decisive steps to address climate change at the upcoming Climate Change Conference in Doha, Qatar.
