UN Secretary-General at Summit of the Americas Outlines Impacts of Climate Change on the Region [viewed]

© Fifth Summit of the Americas18 April 2009: In an address to the Fifth Summit of the Americas, taking place in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon referred to the impact of climate change on the Americas, from the shrinking glaciers in the Andes to deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon and the rising sea levels endangering the small islands of the Caribbean.

CPF Study Warns About Damage to Forests from Climate Change [viewed]

April 2009: The Global Forest Expert Panel of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), led by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), has released a report entitled “Adaptation of Forests and People to Climate Change – A Global Assessment Report.” The report presents current knowledge about the impacts of climate change on forests and people and options for adaptation.

UNFCCC Bonn Talks Conclude [viewed]

© Chair Zammit Cutajar gavels the meeting to a close8 April 2009: The fifth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 5) and the seventh session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP 7) concluded on 8 April 2009, in Bonn, Germany. Among other decisions, parties decided to convene two additional meetings in 2009 and they mandated the new AWG-KP Chair John Ashe (Antigua and Barbuda) to prepare a proposal for amendments to the Kyoto Protocol under Article 3.9 (Annex I further commitments) and a text on other issues, such as LULUCF and the flexibility mechanisms.

UNECE, FAO Hold Workshop on Estimating Sustainable Wood Supply for Energy [viewed]

3 April 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) held a one-day workshop on estimating how much wood is available in Europe on a sustainable basis, including for use as biomass for energy. The workshop, held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 30 March 2009, aimed to address gaps in knowledge, including considering socioeconomic and bio-technical constraints to theoretical wood availability when assessing wood supply.
