Indonesia Establishes REDD+ Managing Agency [viewed]

Indonesia Flag10 September 2013: The Government of Indonesia announced the establishment of a national REDD+ agency as part of its climate change partnership with the Government of Norway. The REDD+ Managing Agency will report directly to the President and will manage the reduction of emissions from both forests and peatlands.

Event: Eighth Meeting of the Open Working Group on SDGs (OWG 8) [viewed]

The eighth session of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will take place from 3-7 February 2014, in New York, US. OWG 8 is expected to discuss: Oceans and seas, forests, biodiversity (2 days); Promoting equality, including social equity, gender equality and women's empowerment (1.5 days); and Conflict prevention, post-conflict peacebuilding and the promotion of durable peace, rule of law and governance (1.5 days).

NORDEN Examines Role of Nordic Forests in Climate Change Mitigation [viewed]

Nordic Council Logo29 August 2013: The Nordic Council of Ministers' Working Group on Environment and Economics commissioned a report on the role of Nordic forests in climate change, which was undertaken by Indufor. The report examines the role of forests in climate change mitigation, as part of a cost-effective climate policy.

UNSG Reports on UN's 2013 Work, Highlights Future Challenges [viewed]

United Nations3 September 2013: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has released his annual report on the work of the United Nations. It highlights new global realities to which the UN must adapt, such as environmental degradation, increasing inequality within and among States, growing interconnectedness and rising unemployment. The report describes the UN's efforts to address these challenges through, inter alia, facilitating consultations on the post-2015 development agenda, addressing climate change, promoting human rights, tackling democratic transitions and maintaining peace and security.

WCO Report Reviews Compliance under Trade-Related MEAs [viewed]

wco28 June 2013: The World Customs Organization (WCO) released its annual Illicit Trade Report, which for the first time presents information across five thematic areas in one publication and recognizes the linkages among illicit trade in different commodities. Among its six chapters, the Report features an Environment Section that reviews compliance with the main multi-lateral environment agreements (MEAs) with international trade-related provisions.

Event: Expert Meeting on Taking to Scale Tree-Based Ecosystem Approaches [viewed]

The Program on Forests (PROFOR) is convening this expert meeting as part of a project to promote tree based ecosystem approaches in order to enhance food security, improve resilience to climate change and sequester carbon. As such, the meeting will introduce the draft report titled, ‘Tree-Based Ecosystem Approaches at Scale: Evidence of drivers and impacts on food security, climate change resilience and carbon sequestration'. The meeting will also review lessons learned and identify a possible framework for scaling up tree based ecosystem approaches.

Event: Oslo REDD Exchange 2013 [viewed]

Convened by the Government of Norway through its International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI), the workshop will discuss the landscape approach within the framework of REDD+, commodity supply chains relevant for REDD+, analysis concept and methodology development for REDD+ implementation, jurisdictional approaches, and finance. The workshop will also provide a forum to discuss REDD+ international negotiations and progress in the implementation of national REDD+ programmes. The conference will gather more than 400 representatives of civil society, REDD+ and donor governments, researchers, multilateral organizations and the private sector.
