Event: Land Day 4 [viewed]

This event will be the fourth such event organized by the UNCCD Secretariat, and will take place in parallel to the meetings of the UNFCCC subsidiary body meetings to provide a forum for UNFCCC and UNCCD decision-makers to exchange ideas. Panel Session 1 will focus on climate financing and its long-term impacts on climate adaptation and mitigation at the local level. Panel Session 2 will examine the implication of the REDD+ and Cancun agreements for the drylands. Panel Session 3 will examine green growth and green economy.

Event: Governance for Forests, Nature and People [viewed]

This training course will focus on multi-stakeholder governance design in forested landscapes. Themes to be addressed include: globalization, increased resource extraction, climate change, collaborative learning, and reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). The course is organized by the Centre for International Forestry Research and Wageningen University.

World Bank, GEF Project Supports Mangrove Planting in Kiribati [viewed]

29 March 2011: Over 37,000 mangrove seedlings have recently been planted on the islands of Aranuka, Butaritari, Maiana, Makin and in North and South Tarawa, Kiribati, as part of a project supported by the World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), AusAID and the New Zealand Aid Programme with the aim of reducing Kiribati's vulnerability to climate change, climate variability and sea level rise.

Blue Carbon Working Group Releases Recommendations [viewed]

March 2011: At its first meeting, the International Working Group on Coastal "Blue" Carbon underscored the need for active and effective measures to protect the large and vulnerable carbon pools stored in seagrasses, tidal marshes, and mangroves, and to restore and reestablish their carbon sequestration capacity.

Event: Regional Critical Energy Issues Dialogue [viewed]

This senior-level meeting coordinated by the Organization of American States (OAS) will discuss Latin America and the Caribbean's (LAC) critical energy and climate issues. Participants will also take stock of initiatives under the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) and plan for the region's Energy and Climate Ministerial to be hosted by Colombia in April 2012. Among the topics slated for discussion are energy efficiency, land use and forestry, climate change/adaptation, cleaner fossil fuels and accelerating clean energy deployment in LAC.

23 March 2011: The report of the 31st meeting of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Afforestation and Reforestation (A/R) Working Group, which was held from 14-16 March 2011 in Bonn, Germany, is now available on the CDM website. The Working Group considers matters relating to CDM afforestation and reforestation project activities.

UN-REDD Approves Funding for REDD+ in Ecuador [viewed]

23 March 2011: The UN-REDD Programme Policy Board has agreed, among other things, to approve US$4 million in funding for Ecuador's National Programme for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks).
