Event: Oslo Climate and Forest Conference [viewed]

This conference will seek to establish an interim partnership arrangement for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+). This partnership would aim to ensure rapid implementation of a global coordinated effort to preserve the world's tropical forests, in line with UNFCCC decisions.

UNFCCC Secretariat Publishes Second 2010 Newsletter [viewed]

18 May 2010: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published its second newsletter for 2010, which includes a video address from Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, in which he notes the need for “firmer, fast achievable action across the whole spectrum of climate responses,” emphasizing that negotiations must produce a clear common understanding of what Cancun can deliver.

UN-REDD, World Bank Respond to REDD+ Partnership Proposal [viewed]

12 May 2010: The UN-REDD Programme and the World Bank's Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) and Forest Investment Program (FIP) have released a joint statement in response to a draft document released by the organizers of the meeting on the interim REDD+ (reducing emission from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks) partnership, to be held in Oslo, Norway, on 27 May 2010.

Event: Expert consultation for development of guidelines to integrate climate change considerations into forest management plans [viewed]

This meeting hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO). The objective of the meeting is to provide guidance on the development of guidelines to help forest managers to analyze the potential for and to implement adaptation and mitigation actions in forest management plans. The meeting is a part of a larger effort to develop guidelines that will help forest managers decide how best to take adaptation measures; to capitalize on mitigation opportunities; and to anticipate secondary impacts of climate change on the forest.

UNFCCC Secretariat Publishes Report on Collaborative Activities [viewed]

14 May 2010:The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a report (FCCC/SBSTA/2010/INF.1) that provides an overview of some of the collaborative activities, initiatives and programmes that the Secretariat is engaged in with UN entities, convention secretariats and intergovernmental organizations in order to facilitate an effective international response to climate change.

Proposals Invited for Rio Conventions' Ecosystems and Climate Change Pavilion [viewed]

13 May 2010: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in consultation with the Secretariats of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the UNFCCC, will convene a Rio Conventions Ecosystems and Climate Change Pavilion at the 10th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the CBD, to be held from 18-29 October 2010, in Nagoya, Japan. The Pavilion will also be held during the 16th session of the COP to the UNFCCC, at the end of 2011 in Cancun, Mexico, and the 10th session of the COP to the UNCCD, scheduled to take place in 2011 in the Republic of Korea. This initiative will also be extended to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), which will take place in Brazil in 2012.

UNEP-WCMC Launches Carbon and Co-benefits Website [viewed]

14 May 2010: The UN Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Center (UNEP-WCMC), with support from the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), has launched a new website highlighting the potential for actions on maintaining natural carbon stocks to generate co-benefits, i.e. that are additional to climate change mitigation effects.

UNEP, World Bank Produce Guidebook on Forest Carbon Projects [viewed]

May 2010: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Bank's Carbon Finance Unit and others have published a guidebook titled "Bringing Forest Carbon Projects to the Market." The objective of the publication is to guide project developers and financial investors on developing and implementing profitable forestry projects in the carbon markets.
