CIFOR Blog Questions Effectiveness of Protected Areas [viewed]

24 August 2011: POLEX, a publication on forest policy of the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), highlights the results of a recent study on the effectiveness of protected areas in conserving biodiversity, compared to community-managed forests. Porter-Bolland et al., authors of the study published in Forest Ecology and Management, found that community-managed forests performed better than protected areas in having lower annual deforestation rates and experienced less variation in rates of forest cover loss.

UNEP Issues Policy Brief on the Role of Forests in a Green Economy [viewed]

23 August 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released the fifth issue in its Policy Series on Ecosystem Management, titled "Sustaining Forests: Investing in Our Common Future," which addresses forest issues in relation to the green economy and climate change.

Event: International Symposium on Costs and Benefits of REDD Plus: What, Who, How and When? [viewed]

This symposium is co-organized by Hiroshima University, the UN University's Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS), the Forest Research Institute Malaysia, The Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, and the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature. It seeks to take stock of current knowledge and information on costs and benefits of REDD (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries), and to provide an opportunity to deliberate funding systems to support REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stock) that protect ecosystem services as well as secure the socioeconomic well-being of local communities.

GEF Reports on Eastern Arc Mountain Forests Project [viewed]

18 August 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has presented the results of a project implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) to conserve biodiversity in the Eastern Arc Mountain forests of Tanzania, which, over seven years (2003-2010), increased protected area coverage by over 500,000 hectares and supported the creation of protected forest corridors in sensitive areas, including in the Derema area and Bunduki Gap in the Ulugurus.

Secretary-General Issues Annual Report on UN's Work [viewed]

August 2011: The UN General Assembly has circulated the Report of the Secretary-General on the work of the Organization. This year's report (A/66/1) points to significant changes in the world since 2007, including the impacts of food, fuel and economic shocks, democratic movements in North Africa and the Middle East, and the rising incidence of mega-disasters, and outlines the UN's responses to these and other developments.

Event: 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples [viewed]

Per A/RES/66/296 the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples 2014 will be held as a high-level plenary meeting of the 69th UN General Assembly, and supported by the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (PFII). The aims of the Conference are to share perspectives and best practices on the realization of indigenous peoples' rights, including to pursue the objectives of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

Review of the Indonesia-Norway REDD+ Partnership Released [viewed]

UN-REDD11 August 2011: The UN-REDD Programme has reported on the release of the first evaluation of deliverables of the Indonesia-Norway partnership on REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stock), which was established in May 2010.
