30 May 2008: Representatives from 51 African countries, including 40 Heads of State and Government, joined Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda from 28-30 May 2008, in Yokohama, Japan, to develop a framework for African growth at the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV).
4 June 2008: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization has
released a report on the use of wood biomass as a source of energy. Following
an overview of projections for global energy supply and demand to 2030, the
report discusses wood energy efficiency and competitiveness, highlighting the
use of by-products of the wood processing industry. It also makes
recommendations on issues to address in planning policies and programmes that
support bioenergy development.
30 May 2008: This UN Food and Agriculture Organization study
examines the impact of biofuel production on the human rights to adequate food
and to be free from hunger. It was authored by Asbjørn Eide, senior fellow of the
Norwegian Center for Human Rights at the University of Oslo, and seeks to
contribute to the present discussion on soaring food prices, climate change and

4 June 2008: Projects from Peru and Lao People's Democratic
Republic recently received the Sasakawa Prize, a prestigious award from the UN
Environment Programme (UNEP). The Prize,
which aims to incentivize sustainable and replicable grassroots environmental
efforts, focused this year on “moving towards a low carbon economy.”
May 2008: A new report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) highlights lessons learned from international experience on the promotion of wind energy.The report notes that 75% of installed wind energy capacity is found in just five countries. The report underscores the role of promoting policies to reduce costs, improve revenues and reduce risk for promoters, and the importance of market access and feed-in laws for providing long-term stability and predictability.
21 May 2008: The Global Renewable Energy Forum was held at the Bourbon Cataratas Hotel, in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, from 18-21 May 2008.
14 May 2008: In his opening address at the High-level Segment of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged governments and other actors to prepare agriculture systems to respond to the negative effects of climate change.
This synthesis document (HLC/08/5), drafted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), was prepared for the High-level Conference on World Food Security: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy, which will take place in Rome, Italy, from 3-5 June 2008. 14 May 2008: The 43rd Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the 34th Board of Governors meeting of the African Development Fund (ADF) took place on 14-15 May 2008, in Maputo, Mozambique. The Annual Meetings considered the theme “Fostering Shared Growth: Urbanization, Inequality and Poverty.”
