4 September 2008: In its review of EU energy policies, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has concluded that the regional grouping is a leader in climate change mitigation through its “bold and innovative” energy policies, and welcomes the European Commission's “climate and energy package” proposed in January 2008.
3 September 2008: A new World Bank report estimates that Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in sub-Saharan Africa could potentially amount to 740 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.
September 2008: In a contribution to the September 2008 special issue of the ISO Focus magazine, Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), notes the lack of capacity of most developing countries to participate in the global trade of manufactured goods.
3 September 2008: In an address to the Africa Carbon Forum, currently taking place in Dakar, Senegal, until 5 September 2008, Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary noted that, despite being the hardest hit by climate change, Africa is the continent that has benefited the least from the current international climate change regime, including the Clean Development Mechanism
(CDM).
1 September 2008: On the eve of the third High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness, which met from 2-4 September 2008, in Accra, Ghana, Lennart Båge, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), urged donors and their partners in developing countries to take responsibility for accelerating action to meet the commitments in the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness.
September 2008: The Expert Group Meeting on Advancing Industrial Energy Efficiency in the Post-2012 Framework will meet from 22-23 September 2008, in Washington, DC, US. The meeting is organized by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
26 August 2008: The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) has released a booklet that seeks to raise awareness of energy subsidies and their impact.
28 August 2008: The Africa Carbon Forum will take place from 3-5 September 2008, in Dakar, Senegal. At the thirteenth Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC in Bali, Indonesia in December 2007, the Secretariat of the UNFCCC announced its intent to convene the first Africa Carbon Forum, in collaboration with the International Emissions Trading Association and the partner agencies of the Nairobi Framework, including the UN Development Programme, UN Environment Programme, World Bank and African Development Bank.
27 August 2008: The seventh issue of the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) Technology Watch Briefing Report, entitled “Next-Generation Networks and Energy Efficiency,” has been released.
26 August 2008: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Secretariat met with Ministers from West African countries, from 25-26 August 2008, in Cotonou, Benin, to develop a regional programme for climate change and biodiversity that provides the region with a more efficient use of resources from the GEF's Resource Allocation Framework (RAF).
