29 September 2008: This European Environment Agency (EEA) report presents past and projected climate change and impacts in Europe, based on approximately 40 indicators, and identifies sectors and regions that are vulnerable and require adaptation.
29 September 2008: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has launched a new study entitled “Deploying Renewables: Principles for Effective Policies,” which includes a comparative analysis of the performance of various renewables promotion policies around the world.
29 September 2008: During the ninth Indo-EU summit, which took place on 29 September 2008, in Marseille, France, India and the EU agreed to expand their cooperation in the field of nuclear energy and environmental protection. They also reviewed the 2006 Joint Action Plan and agreed to add
several new areas of cooperation, including in the field of exploitation of solar energy in India and civil nuclear research and development including in fusion energy.
September 2008: The next UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Electronic Forum on Biotechnology in Food and Agriculture, to be held from 10 November to 7 December 2008, will address the potential role that agricultural biotechnologies can play for bioenergy production in
developing countries, in particular liquid biofuels.
23 September 2008: The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Miguel D'Escoto, opened its annual High-Level debate by stating that the confluence of global interrelated crises, including climate change, high food prices, disasters and financial troubles, highlight the need to overturn the culture of selfishness and shift towards solidarity.
18 September 2008: Speaking at the Financial Times-World Energy Council's Energy Leaders Summit, Ad Melkert, UN Under-Secretary General and Associate Administrator of the UN Development Programme, stated that access to affordable and sustainable energy services stands as a roadblock for
millions in Africa, Asia and Central and South America to escape poverty.
16 September 2008: Angel Gurría, Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), participated in the Energy Leaders Summit organized by the Financial Times and World Energy Council, in London, UK, on 16-17 September 2008. Addressing heads of the main traditional and new energy companies, as well as government representatives and financiers, who met to discuss the future of energy beyond 2025, Gurría highlighted the need for public-private partnerships for the development and deployment of “large-scale transformative energy technologies.”
16 September 2008: The European Parliament's Development Committee has adopted a report arguing that the budget proposed by the European Commission to help developing countries fight climate change is not enough, and suggesting that the Global Climate Change Alliance should receive at least 25% of the revenue of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.
11 September 2008: The EU Parliament's Industry Committee decided to support the EU Commission's target to achieve a 10% share of biofuels used in road transport by 2020, while insisting that 40% of that renewable energy must come from alternative sources not competing with food production, such as electricity and hydrogen produced from renewable sources as well as “second generation” biofuels made from waste, lingo-cellulosic biomass or algae.
September 2008: An International Symposium on ‘Resolving the Water-Energy Nexus' will be held in Paris, France, from 26-28 November 2008. The Symposium will convene within the framework of the UN Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) International Hydrological Programme (IHP) in collaboration with UNESCO's Renewable Energy Programme, and will be organized by the non-profit association RED-Ethique.
