January 2009: Ivan Hascic and Nick Johnstone (Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) Environment Directorate) and Antoine Dechezleprêtre, Matthieu Glachant and Yann Ménière, CERNA, Mines ParisTech, have co-authored a new study entitled “Invention and Transfer of Climate Change Mitigation Technologies on a Global Scale: A Study Drawing on Patent Data.”
9 January 2009: In an effort to spur economic growth, Japan and the Republic of Korea have both announced plans to invest billions of dollars in green projects. Speaking about the countries' plans, Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), noted that investments in clean technologies and renewable energy infrastructure can “counter recession and unemployment” and lay the basis for more sustainable economic growth in the 21st century.
9 January 2009: Prince Albert II of Monaco has begun a month-long visit to Antarctica to assess the impact and raise awareness of climate change.
31 December 2008: The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Climate Neutral Network has reported that Air New Zealand successfully tested a new jatropha-fuelled jumbo jet. The airline said the experience demonstrated that jatropha biofuel is suitable for use in airplanes without the need for engine modifications.
December 2008: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) has published a discussion paper entitled: “Global Carbon Markets: Are There Opportunities for Sub-Saharan Africa?” The paper investigates the constraints that prevent Sub-Saharan countries from fully participating in global carbon markets and suggests policies for better integration.
December 2008: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) reports that, after a year where weather-related disasters resulted in approximately US$200 billion in damages, many are anticipating 2009 to be a year of progress in the fight against climate change. In particular, many are looking towards the new US administration to make big changes with regard to climate change policy.
December 2008: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risoe Centre has published its Working Paper No. 6, entitled: “Electricity sector no-lose targets in developing countries for post-2012: Assessment of emission reduction and reduction credits.”
18 December 2008: At a side event held during the 14th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, held in Poznań, Poland, the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) launched the Global Energy Efficiency 21 (GEE21) project.
17 December 2008: During the ministerial conference “Water for Agriculture and Energy in Africa: the Challenges of Climate Change,” held from 15-17 December 2008, in Sirte, Libya, ministers from 53 African countries adopted the Sirte Declaration, in which they pledge to promote water development throughout the continent to fully exploit Africa's agricultural and hydroenergy potential.
December 2008: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) presented a submission, titled Use of biochar (charcoal) to replenish soil carbon pools, restore soil fertility and sequester carbon dioxide, to the fourth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA4), which convened in Poznań, Poland, from 1-10 December 2008.
