27 February 2009: Carbon Finance for Agriculture, Silviculture, Conservation and Action against Deforestation (CASCADe), which is coordinated by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UNEP Risø Centre in partnership with the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development and the French National Forestry Office, recently selected four projects to move forward, pending formal approval of their Project Idea Notes.
26 February 2009: The First Ministerial Forum on Water of the Group of 77 met in Muscat, Oman, from 23-25 February 2009, and brought together delegations from 130 member States who agreed on 21 conclusions and recommendations.
March 2009: The World Bank, in collaboration with the French Agency for Development, the Global Gas Flaring Reduction Initiative and the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, is organizing the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Carbon Forum, scheduled to convene from 6-7 May 2009, in Cairo, Egypt.
March 2009: The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat is organizing the APEC Workshop on Policies that Promote Energy Efficiency in Transport, scheduled to convene from 24-25 March 2009, in Singapore.
23 February 2009: In a speech delivered at the “Global Korea 2009 - Korea in a Reshaping World” conference, International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka stressed the importance of investment for energy supply and clean energy technologies, and international cooperation for energy efficiency and clean energy technology diffusion.
18 February 2009: The Executive Board (EB) of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), at its 45th meeting, held from 11-13 February 2009, agreed to launch a call for public inputs on the various aspects of the draft “Tool to determine the baseline efficiency of thermal or electrical energy generation systems.” The draft describes various procedures to determine the baseline efficiency of an energy generation system, for the purpose of estimating baseline emissions.
February: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council has approved an intersessional work programme, including climate change projects amounting to US$47.46 million.
February 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is organizing a workshop on energy efficiency in housing, from 21-22 April 2009, in Sofia, Bulgaria. The workshop will bring together representatives from governments, the private sector and academia to provide UNECE member States with policy guidance and suggestions on how to increase energy efficiency in the housing sector.
17 February 2009: In an op-ed published in the Financial Times, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and former US Vice-President Al Gore call for using the economic stimulus that is needed to tackle the global economic crisis to launch a new green global economy.
17 February 2009: In an opening address to the third meeting of the Group on International Aviation and Climate Change of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Roberto Kobeh González, ICAO President of the Council, indicated that the meeting will focus on formulating the Programme of Action on International Aviation and Climate Change.
