Event: Eye on Earth Summit [viewed]

The Eye on Earth Summit, Pursuing a Vision, is being organised under the theme "Dynamic system to keep the world environmental situation under review." This event will launch the global environmental information network (EIN) strengthening initiative and address major policy and technical issues. The Summit is co-organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, European Environment Agency, among others, and funded by the United Arab Emirates. An expected outcome of the Summit will be a clear statement on ways and means to strengthen existing initiatives and fill gaps towards informed policy making in support of a sustainable future. As part of preparations for the UNCSD in 2012, the Eye on the Earth Summit represents an opportunity and milestone to focus attention on the 20 years of collective efforts of making the best environmental information available to support decision making in order to achieve sustainable development, reduce poverty and transform the global economy.

UNDP Implements GEF Hydropower Project in Lao People's Democratic Republic [viewed]

7 April 2011: Funding from the Small Grants Programme of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), has allowed villagers in Lao People's Democratic Republic to access clean electricity from a 7.5kW hydro-power turbine.

First IRENA Assembly Designates Permanent Seat, Elects Council Members [viewed]

6 April 2011: The fifth session of the Preparatory Commission for the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the first session of the Assembly of IRENA were held from 3-5 April 2011, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Assembly was the inaugural meeting IRENA's governing body, and was attended by 950 participants, including one Head of State, over 50 ministers, 30 ministerial-level officials, 670 country delegates, 130 observers and officials, and 70 accredited media.

African Experts Discuss Challenges for Sustainable Hydropower Development [viewed]

2 April 2011: The Conference on Hydropower for Sustainable Development in Africa took place 31 March - 1 April 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Conference focused on the following themes: Africa renewable energy potential, including hydropower development in Ethiopia; regional cooperation for water and energy, including transboundary issues; sustainability and good practices; and finance and investments.

Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas Launches Clearinghouse Newsletter [viewed]

April 2011: The Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) released the first issue of the ECPA Clearinghouse Newsletter. The newsletter marks the first anniversary of the 2010 Energy and Climate Ministerial of the Americas, held under the auspices of the US Department of Energy, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Organization of American States (OAS), which established the ECPA.
