20 June 2009: The first Asia Low Carbon Economy Forum convened from 19-20 June 2009, in Beijing, China. The Forum was jointly organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), in partnership with the National Development and Reform Commission of China and WWF, and brought together over 300 policy makers, experts and mayors.
19 June 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNECLAC) and the Government of Germany concluded negotiations in Berlin, Germany, on 18 June 2009, to extend their cooperation programme until 2012, including joint work in the area of “Climate Change: old and new opportunities for sustainable energy and energy efficiency.”
19 June 2009: The Asian Development Bank's (ADB) High-Level Dialogue on Climate Change in Asia and the Pacific, which took place on 16-17 June 2009, in Manila, the Philippines, highlighted the special stake and role of Asian and Pacific countries in solving the climate crisis.
18 June 2009: The World Bank approved a US$180 million loan to the Government of India, to renovate and modernize old, inefficient and polluting coal-fired power plants. The project, which is expected to lower carbon emissions and boost power production at these plants, is co-financed with a US$45.4 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
18 June 2009: The Joint Implementation (JI) Supervisory Committee (JISC) has released the report of its 16th meeting, which convened from 17-18 June 2009, at the UN Campus in Bonn, Germany, and considered issues related to the functioning of JI.
18 June 2009: The UN General Assembly's (UNGA) interactive thematic dialogue on “Energy efficiency, energy conservation and new and renewable sources of energy” took place at UN Headquarters in New York, US, on 18 June.
June 2009: The 15th edition of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)-UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Agricultural Outlook addresses, among other issues, the interdependence between food and energy markets and the possible impacts of expanding demand for biofuels on agricultural commodity prices.
17 June 2009: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched a high-level Energy and Climate Change Advisory Group, which will bring together business leaders, experts and energy practitioners to advise him on climate change and energy challenges.
17 June 2009: The Governing Board of the International Energy Agency (IEA) has approved the hosting in Paris, France, of the Secretariat of the International Partnership on Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC).
15 June 2009: In light of the success of the “Cool UN” initiative implemented during the summer of 2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced that the programme will resume at UN Headquarters in New York, US, beginning on 15 June 2009 and continuing for a period of three months.
