ECLAC Warns Caribbean Countries Against Costs of Inaction on Climate Change [viewed]

26 September 2011: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released its September 2011 newsletter, noting the opening of registration for Forest Day at the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UNFCCC in Durban, South Africa, on 4 December 2011. The newsletter also features articles on REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stock), forest governance and climate change.

Event: Renewables 2011 Global Status Report - Launch Event [viewed]

The Renewable Energy Global Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) will be holding a launch event for its Renewables 2011 Global Status Report. The report captures the most up-to-date information on renewable energy policies, industries, investments and markets. Some of the main messages of the report include that, in 2010: renewables made up nearly half of newly installed electricity capacity; renewable energies made up an estimated 16% of global final energy consumption; solar photovoltaic usage more than doubled due to price reductions; global investments in renewables increased by over 30% to a record US$ 211 billion; and emerging and developing economies significantly increased their share of renewables policies, investment, supply and use. The event will be held in conjunction with the launch of the International Renewable Energy Agency's (IRENA) Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC) in Bonn, Germany. It is taking place from 9:00-11:00 am.

Event: International Workshop “Domestic Biogas Programmes in Asia; Transformation Towards Commercial Sectors and Development of Effective Financing Facilities” [viewed]

This workshop is co-organized by the Energy for All Partnership, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Hivos/Indonesia Domestic Biogas Programme and SNV Netherlands Development Organisation. Its specific objectives are to: help prepare for the transformation of national biogas programmes to commercial biogas sectors during the period to 2016 by outlining a sector development plan by country, including pro-poor commercialization strategy; and to present and discuss the Asian Rural Biogas Facility as developed by the KfW bank and ADB in the framework of the Energy for All Partnership. The workshop will feature both plenary and parallel sessions, including a session on financing in the domestic biogas sector under the Clean Development Mechanism and non-compliance carbon market. On the second day, the Indonesia Domestic Biogas Programme will organize a field visit. A total of 120 persons are expected, consisting of delegations from 15 countries in Asia, representatives from the ADB and other potential external financiers and stakeholders from the Indonesia Domestic Biogas Programme. The workshop is also open to all interested stakeholders.

EU, Switzerland Continue Negotiations on Linking their Emissions Trading Systems [viewed]

20 September 2011: The second round of negotiations between the EU and Switzerland on linking their carbon emissions trading systems was held on 20 September 2011, in Zurich, Switzerland. The negotiations seek to develop an agreement under which Switzerland and the EU would recognize each other's carbon emissions allowances.
