World Bank PMR Assembly Discusses Domestic Climate Action and Carbon Pricing Instruments [viewed]

pmr7 March 2014: Participants from 30 countries, representing approximately 80% of global emissions, discussed domestic actions taken in pursuit of low-emissions development at the Eighth Partnership Assembly of the World Bank's Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR). Participants also discussed mitigation approaches and carbon pricing initiatives, such as emissions trading schemes and carbon taxes.

CGIAR Launches Projects on Women and Low-Emissions Agriculture in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Honduras [viewed]

CCAFS6 March 2014: The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research's (CGIAR) Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) has initiated three action research projects in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Honduras as part of its gender strategy, which seeks to advance climate mitigation efforts that benefit both men and women farmers. These projects aim to understand the complex and surprising impacts agricultural practices and climate policies can have on women and local livelihoods.

WUC Booklet Highlights Cities as Key to Sustainable Future [viewed]

UN-HABITAT4 March 2014: Cities are key battlegrounds in global efforts to achieve a sustainable future, according to ‘The City We Need,' a booklet launched by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) on 4 March 2014, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The booklet sets out a vision of the 21st century city, recommends nine principles for achieving sustainable urban development, and proposes a policy and legislative framework for a new urban paradigm.

IEA Assesses Cost-Effectiveness of Variable Renewable Energy [viewed]

IEA26 February 2014: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a book exploring how power systems with high shares of variable renewable energy (VRE), such as wind and solar, can remain reliable and cost-effective. Its key finding is that a high share of renewables can be affordable  in any country context.

UNEP Highlights Link between Emissions and Adaptation Gaps [viewed]

UNEPFebruary 2014: The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Global Environmental Alert Service (GEAS) has published a paper titled ‘Emissions and Adaptation Gaps: Can we bridge the cracks in climate policy?' The paper indicates that the emissions gap (the difference between emissions reductions pledged and those required to keep warming below 2°C) and the adaptation gap (the difference between funding and capacity levels required for adaptation and the amount committed) are both increasing.

Event: World Water Day [viewed]

World Water Day 2014 takes place on March 22, with events in 2014 focusing on the theme of "Water and Energy". The events this year are coordinated by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and UN University (UNU). Events celebrating World Water Day will take place across the globe, including in Sri Lanka, the US, the Philippines, Benin, Poland and Tunisia among many others, and are expected to engage stakeholders, government officials, non governmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations and youth on issues related to water and energy.
