24 January 2013: In an op-ed appearing in The Washington Post, Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank Group, underscored that climate change should be at the top of the agenda at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, warning economic leaders that continued inaction “imperils all of the development gains we have made."
22 January 2013: The UN Development Programme's (UNDP) Africa Adaptation Programme (AAP) has published a “Handbook on Capitalisation of Experiences 2012.” The Handbook focuses on climate change adaptation experiences and aims to build the capacity of climate change adaptation programmes and project teams.
17 January 2013: The Government of the Cook Islands has submitted a Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) seeking support for implementation to pursue the objective of achieving electricity 100% based on renewable sources by 2020. The proposal includes an implementation plan to generate 50% of its energy production from renewables by 2015, phasing out its current diesel generator-dominated system.
In the fight against climate change, shifting the energy sector from fossil fuels to clean energy requires a massive, transformative change, not least in mindset. The challenge is particularly stark in those countries where the industry is dominated by large state-owned power producers.
22 January 2013: The Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) has reported on the conclusion of Acclimate, a four-year project dedicated to climate change adaptation. The culmination of the project's work, a regional strategy for climate change adaption, was adopted by the IOC's 28th Council of Ministers on 17 January 2013, in the Seychelles.
22 January 2013: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a report detailing how the Nordic region can become carbon neutral by 2050. The report, titled “Nordic Energy Technology Perspectives: Pathways to a Carbon Neutral Energy Future,” is IEA's first regional edition of its flagship publication series “Energy Technology Perspectives.”
21 January 2013: The Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21), in cooperation with the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies (ISEP), has released its annual "REN21 Global Futures Report (GFR)," which presents a range of expert perspectives on possible renewable energy futures.

17 January 2013: In a lecture delivered at Stanford University, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described the current state of the world and "the future we must shape together." He outlined three ways to navigate our way through this "Great Transition," namely by advancing sustainable development, helping people meet their aspirations for democracy and dignity, and empowering women and young people.
