CIF, CPI Publish Background Paper on Geothermal [viewed]

CIFOctober 2014: A background report prepared by the Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) for the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) finds that, overall, geothermal is cost competitive with its fossil fuel alternatives, even in the absence of a carbon price. At a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of 9-13 US cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), it is among the least expensive renewable sources of power. However, the publication points out that more deployment is needed for geothermal to achieve its full potential.

European Council Agrees on 2030 Climate and Energy Policy Framework [viewed]

European Council24 October 2014: The European Council has endorsed a binding EU target of at least a 40% domestic reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 compared to 1990, and will submit its contribution under the UNFCCC by the first quarter of 2015, in accordance with the timeline agreed at the 19th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 19). The target is part of the 2030 Climate and Energy Policy Framework agreed by the European Council at its meeting on 23-24 October 2014.

Senior Arctic Officials Prepare for Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting [viewed]

Arctic Council23 October 2014: The Senior Arctic Officials (SAOs) and Heads of Delegation of Indigenous Permanent Participant organizations of the Arctic Council met to assess overall progress toward the priorities set under the Canadian Chairmanship. SAO Chair, Vincent Rigby, noted that the productive meeting would yield a "rich set of recommendations" for the Arctic Council Ministers to consider. Notably, SAOs approved a report outlining concrete recommendations for reducing woodstove black carbon emissions.

Event: India Clean Cookstoves Forum 2014 [viewed]

The India Clean Cookstoves Forum (ICCF) 2014, which aims to tackle barriers to the large-scale adoption of improved cookstoves (ICS) in India, will feature a practitioner workshop, conference and business model workshop. The practitioner workshop will take place on the first day and feature in-depth technical discussions on marketing, distribution networks, financing, gender and product design. Emphasis will be placed on increasing demand for and supply of ICS. The conference, to be held the second day, will focus on market transformation and ways to make ICS available in all Indian households. Representatives from Indian industry, business, banks, the government and the cookstove sector will offer their ideas for the best path to widespread adoption, through everything from marketing to government policies. On the third day, the business model workshop will serve to encourage, analyze and improve the business models of new entrepreneurs in this sector, to make them more attractive to investors. Expected participants at the Forum are practitioners, project developers, investors, banks, researchers, social enterprises, government, donor agencies, foundations and NGOs. The German International Cooperation (GIZ), Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Tata Trusts and the Shell Foundation are partnering to organize the Forum.
