IEA2 December 2013: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a report, titled 'Energy Policy Highlights,' which showcases new developments in IEA member country energy policies, including examples of challenges, successes and best practices of policies and policy development. The examples were chosen to illustrate the changing nature of energy policy in the 21st century.

Event: Workshop on The Future of Social Housing: Environmental and Social Challenges [viewed]

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and UN-HABITAT, in cooperation the European Federation of Public, Cooperative and Social Housing (CECODHAS), will hold a workshop exploring the future of social housing in UNECE member states. The second day of the event will focus on environmental sustainability issues of social housing, including energy efficiency, resource efficiency, climate neutrality and "green social housing." Case studies will be examined from Sweden, Trento, Italy and Quebec, Canada.

Chinese Government and UNEP Report Highlights China's Energy Consumption Achievements [viewed]

UNEP26 November 2013: Together with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Government of China has released a report on China's green investments, titled "China's Green Long March: A Study of Renewable Energy, Environmental Industry and Cement Sectors." The report finds that, despite rapid advancement towards a green economy, significant environmental and social challenges must be surmounted if China is to achieve its sustainable development goals.

UNESCO Panel Recognizes Critical Role of Mountain Regions in Water Security [viewed]

Unesco14 November 2013: Water resources in mountainous areas play a critical role in agriculture, biodiversity, hydroelectricity and water supply, according to a High Level Panel Session organized during the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) 37th General Conference. The panel, titled ‘Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources and Adaptation Policies in Mountainous Regions,' recognized the high sensitivity of mountains to climate change and discussed strategies for coping with climate change impacts on water resources in mountainous areas.

CTCN Opens in Denmark [viewed]

ctcn21 November 2013: The Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN), co-led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risø Centre and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), opened in Copenhagen, Denmark. The CTCN will assist developing countries in making informed decisions about environmentally sound technologies for adaptation and mitigation, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improving climate resilience.
