Event: 2014 APEC Economic Leaders' Week [viewed]

The 2014 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Week, hosted by China, will take place in Beijing from 5-11 November, and will include several high-level and other meetings, convened under the theme 'Shaping the Future through Asia-Pacific Partnership'. Key events taking place during the week are: the Concluding Senior Officials' Meeting (CSOM), from 5-6 November; the 26th APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM), from 7-8 November; and the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting (AELM), from 10-11 November. Other events hosted during the week include: the APEC CEO Summit, from 8-10 November; APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) Dialogue with Leaders; and Leaders' spouse programs. The Leaders' Week will also mark the culmination of the 2014 APEC China Year. APEC's 21 member economies are: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, the Russian Federation, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the US and Viet Nam.

Event: Workshop for Energy Regulators: Energy Pricing, Reform and Transition [viewed]

This expert group meeting on fuel price reform and renewable energy energy transitions, taking place from 29-31 October 2014, is organized by the UN Office of Sustainable Development (UNOSD), in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Global Subsidies Initiative (GSI) of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). The workshop will specifically focus on fuel pricing reform as a measure necessary for the transition to renewable energy, and complements a UNOSD workshop series on 'Fossil Fuels to Renewable Energy Transitions'. The workshop also builds on work by the organizing partners to build a network of fuel price regulators, and will benefit policymakers from approximately 20 African and Asian countries. Themes covered are: technical issues associated to energy policy; energy transition and political economy of reforms; and reform lessons and work plan building.

World Bank Links Energy Subsidy Reform to Job Creation in MENA Region [viewed]

World Bank8 October 2014: A study by the World Bank finds evidence of a positive relationship between fuel prices, per capita gross domestic product (GDP) growth and job creation, and encourages the governments of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to cut energy subsidies in order to build dynamic, employment-intensive economies. The study, titled ‘Corrosive Subsidies,' also projects economic growth in the MENA transition countries to be hampered by macroeconomic imbalances and unfinished subsidy reform.

Event: 2014 Executive Assembly of the World Energy Council [viewed]

The annual meeting of the World Energy Council (WEC) will be hosted in 2014 by the Colombian Member Committee (COCME) of the WEC. Focusing on the delivery of sustainable energy systems on different levels, the event will provide an opportunity for the WEC community and energy sector representatives to engage in a series of open and private discussions. The meeting will comprise a series of related events, including: the World Energy Leaders', the Future Energy Leaders' and Energy Trilemma Summits, held on 22 and 23 October; the Latin America Ministerial Meeting, on 24 October; and the WEC's major governance meetings, culminating in the full WEC Executive Assembly Plenary, on 20-22 October, which will set the strategic direction for the organization.

EuropeAid Launches Rural Electrification Financing Initiative [viewed]

European Union2 October 2014: In an effort to accelerate rural electrification in developing countries, the European Commission's Directorate-General for Development and Cooperation (EuropeAid) has launched an ‘Electrification Financing Initiative' (ElectriFI), which aims to generate business opportunities in this area by supporting the private sector.

IEA, ASEAN Strengthen Collaboration on Energy Efficiency, Renewables [viewed]

CCXG Forum Addresses Climate Policy Linkages, Energy and Land Transformations [viewed]

Asia-Pacific Forum Fosters Partnerships for Climate Resilience [viewed]

apan4 October 2014: The Fourth Asia Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum, which convened under the theme ‘Fostering strong partnerships to build a climate resilient Asia Pacific,' brought together over 600 scientists, government officials, representatives from civil society organizations, the private sector and donor agencies from more than 30 countries to come up with innovative solutions to address the impacts of climate change.

BNEF: Global Clean Energy Investments on the Rise [viewed]

bloombergnewenergyfinance2 October 2014: According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), over the first nine months of 2014, global investments in clean energy were 16% higher than during the same period in 2013. Total clean energy investments in this period reached US$175 billion. Investments in the third quarter of 2014 were similarly higher than in the previous year, driven in part by record-high investments in solar energy in China and Japan.
