Marshall Islands Submits INDC [viewed]

marshall-flag21 July 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has announced that the Marshall Islands is the first small island developing State (SIDS) Party to formally submit its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC), which sets out a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target of 32% below 2010 levels by 2025. The INDC also includes an indicative target of reducing emissions 45% below 2010 levels by 2030. The submission from the Marshall Islands brings the total number of Parties to submit an INDC to 48.

APEC Advances Sustainable City Development Efforts [viewed]

apec16 July 2015: Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies have announced accelerated support for sustainable city development in the region. According to the APEC Energy Working Group, APEC officials are advancing technical support for solar-powered, energy-efficient buildings and high efficiency lighting, improved vehicle fuel efficiency labeling and consumer information, and accessible green energy financing.

FfD3 Concludes with Adoption of Addis Ababa Action Agenda [viewed]

iisdrs_FfD316 July 2015: The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD3) has concluded with the adoption of the Outcome Document of the Conference, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA). In support of the AAAA, a number of significant partnerships were launched during FfD3, including: the Addis Tax Initiative, which will support strengthening domestic tax systems; the Global Financing Facility in Support of Every Woman Every Child, which brings together countries, donors and the private sector; and the Commission on Financing Global Education.

IISD GSI Event: Fossil-Fuel Subsidies Reform Can Finance Development [viewed]

Participants also underlined that current low international energy prices create a window of opportunity for fossil-fuel subsidy reform.

IRENA Conference Launches Martinique Action Plan for Renewables Deployment on SIDS [viewed]

IRENA14 July 2015: A conference organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has launched an action plan to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy in small island developing states (SIDS). The Martinique Action Plan outlines practical steps for deploying renewable energy resources and technologies in SIDS. It also seeks to demonstrate commitment of 27 SIDS and 19 development partners to the IRENA of SIDS Lighthouses Initiative in the run-up to the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference.

Event: World Water Week 2015 [viewed]

World Water Week 2015 will meet under the theme ‘Water for Development,' with experts, practitioners, decision makers, business innovators and young professionals from a range of sectors and countries coming together to network, exchange ideas, stimulate innovative thinking and develop solutions to water-related challenges. The Week will include 160 events and eight workshops to discuss issues related to financing, the proposed sustainable development goals (SDGs), integrity, gender, climate change, energy, sanitation, food, conflict resolution and water management. World Water Week in Stockholm is an annual event that focuses on current global water issues, and is organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI). 2015 is the jubilee year for both the Week and the Stockholm Water Prize.

Event: Green Climate Fund (GCF) Regional Workshop Pacific Islands [viewed]

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) Secretariat is hosting a workshop for the national designated authorities (NDAs) and focal points, as well as registered observer organizations and accredited entities (AEs) of the Pacific island countries. The workshop, which follows similar trainings in Central America and Asia, is being held under the auspices of the Fund's Readiness and Preparatory Support Programme. The agenda includes sessions focused on preparing NDAs and focal points for their role in communicating country-driven investment priorities, understanding which projects the GCF can support, accessing the GCF's funds for country priority projects and programmes, and ensuring appropriate oversight of GCF activities at the country level. Discussions will also focus on how the GCF can best support the region, priorities and issues, accreditation support, and public and private sector partnerships. In addition, on the last day of the workshop, the GCF will hold bilateral meetings with NDAs and focal points.

OECD, IEA, NEA, ITF Report Identifies Policies Misaligned with a Low-Carbon Economy [viewed]

low_carbon_economy3 July 2015: A report titled 'Aligning Policies for a Low-Carbon Economy' identifies current policy and regulatory frameworks that are not in line with creating a low-carbon economy. The report focuses on contradictory public policies, such as those that encourage investment in fossil fuels and work against global goals on climate change. It examines the policy domains of investment, taxation, innovation and skills, trade and adaptation, as well as sectors greatly impacting the climate such as electricity, urban mobility and rural land use.

UNEP, CIFOR Publications Focus on REDD+ in Tanzania [viewed]

forests_ecosystemsJuly 2015: A report undertaken by the Tanzania Forest Services, in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) under the UN-REDD Programme, provides an economic rationale for Tanzania to invest in more sustainable use and conservation of its forest assets. Tanzania is the also focus of a publication by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), which outlines the rules and choices to be addressed by participatory countries in REDD+ activities and shows potential technical problems and related options.

Event: African Regional Workshop on Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) [viewed]

The UNFCCC Secretariat is organizing a capacity-building workshop for the African region on Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs). The workshop aims to strengthen the use of NAMAs as a tool for pre-2020 and post-2020 climate change action. Regional mitigation experts from international organizations and the private sector will present on designing and implementing NAMAs, as well as support programmes, and participants will share experiences, lessons learned and best practices. Discussions will focus on challenges and issues faced, financial engineering and investment strategies for leveraging multi-source financing, measurement, reporting and verification (MRV), sustainable development co-benefits, and the NAMA Registry.
