15 April 2011: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) organized a Pacific National Stakeholders Meeting on Climate Financing on 14-15 April 2011, in Koror, Palau. The two-day meeting brought together representatives of ten Pacific countries to discuss means of increasing their access to climate funds and using them sustainably, and options available to Pacific Island countries to access and effectively deliver climate change adaptation initiatives.
8 April 2011: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has published an Economics Department Working Paper titled “Mitigation potential of removing fossil fuel subsidies, a general equilibrium assessment,” authored by Jean-Marc Burniaux and Jean Chateau.
This Day is co-organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Basel Convention Secretariat, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The Day will focus on the role of information and communications technologies (ICT) for the environment, one of the action lines defined in the WSIS Geneva Plan of Action. The event will include workshops, interactive discussions, publication releases and networking sessions on issues such as energy efficiency, climate monitoring and adaptation, e-waste and the green economy transition. The event will be open to all stakeholders, including governments, private sector, civil society, academia, as well as international and regional institutions. Participation in this event is possible either on-site or remotely, presenting recent publications or displaying the most recent activities from relevant organization at the e-environment exhibition stand.
This meeting, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), World Bank, UN-REDD Programme and Chatham House, aims to encourage coordinated monitoring and assessment of REDD+ and forest governance. It will mark the joint launch of two new tools to assist practitioners: the Guidance Framework for Monitoring REDD+ Governance developed by UN-REDD and Chatham House; and the Framework for Assessing and Monitoring Forest Governance emerging from the 2010 Stockholm meeting on forest governance led by the World Bank and FAO. Working sessions will be organised to enable a discussion of piloting processes, identify key points to test and consider the governance monitoring needs of different stakeholders (governments, private sector, local communities, etc.).
15 April 2011: The Directorate-General for Climate Action of the European Commission has launched a public consultation on two forthcoming regulations related to the implementation of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) concerning monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gases (GHGs), accreditation of verifiers and verification of annual emission reports.
15 April 2011: The 23rd session of the Governing Council (GC-23) of the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) took place from 11-15 April 2011, in Nairobi, Kenya, under the theme “sustainable urban development through expanding equitable access to land and housing, basic services and infrastructure.”
13 April 2011: The European Commission has unveiled a proposal to overhaul the rules on the taxation of energy products in the EU. The proposal includes new rules to restructure the taxation of energy products to remove current imbalances and take into account both their emissions and energy content.
13 April 2011: The EU has published the text of its trade agreement with Colombia and Peru, which includes commitments to effectively implement international conventions on environmental protection.
April 2011: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution (A/65/L.69) at its 65th session under agenda item 62 (a) on the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), regarding progress in implementation and international support.
