OECD Publishes Report on the Economics of Climate Change Mitigation [viewed]

5 June 2009: A new report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) outlines key steps towards the development of a single international carbon price, including phasing out fossil fuel subsidies and expanding and linking regional carbon markets through direct linking of existing emission trading systems, scaled-up Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), use of sectoral crediting mechanisms, and incorporation of the forest sector.

Event: Twenty-sixth session of the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum [viewed]

The 26th session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC26/GMEF) of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is scheduled to convene from 21-24 February 2011, at the UN Office in Nairobi, Kenya. In pursuance of General Assembly resolution 53/242 (Report of the Secretary-General on environment and human settlements) of 28 July 1999, the Governing Council constitutes the annual ministerial-level global environmental forum in which participants gather to review important and emerging policy issues in the field of the environment. The 12th Session of the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF) will be held from 19-20 February 2011, prior to GC26/GMEF.

World Bank Funds Energy Efficient Light Bulb Replacement in Togo [viewed]

28 May 2009: The World Bank approved an Efficient Lighting Project for the City of Lome, Togo, including a Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant totaling US$1.82 million to: disseminate at least 400,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) to replace incandescent light bulbs currently in use; organize outreach and awareness-building campaigns aimed at promoting an energy efficiency culture; and introduce a regulatory and quality control mechanism in the national distribution market for CFLs.
