January 2009: Ivan Hascic and Nick Johnstone (Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) Environment Directorate) and Antoine Dechezleprêtre, Matthieu Glachant and Yann Ménière, CERNA, Mines ParisTech, have co-authored a new study entitled “Invention and Transfer of Climate Change Mitigation Technologies on a Global Scale: A Study Drawing on Patent Data.”
January 2009: The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is organizing an expert meeting on “Maritime transport and the climate change challenge.” The meeting, which will convene from 16-18 February 2009, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, aims to help identify relevant policy actions for climate change mitigation and adaptation in maritime transport, while furthering other objectives such as transport efficiency, trade facilitation, trade competitiveness and sustainable development.
8 January 2009: The World Bank has released a guide on “Policy and Institutional Reforms to Support Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in Development Programs.” The publication offers targeted guidance on the linkages between the design of development programs and the objectives of adapting to climate change and limiting emissions of greenhouse gases.
December 2008: The World Bank is working with six pilot countries – Bangladesh, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique and Vietnam– on a US$8 million study funded by the Governments of the UK, the Netherlands and Switzerland to help decision makers in developing countries better understand and assess the risks posed by climate change, and to better cost, prioritize, sequence and integrate adaptation strategies into their development plans and budgets.
10 December 2008: The World Bank released a new report entitled “Low Carbon, High Growth: Latin American Responses to Climate Change.” The study argues that a shift towards low carbon activities could enhance the region's competitiveness and contribute to a faster recovery from the current economic meltdown.
8 December 2008: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Secretary General, Angel Gurría, participated in a high level meeting of Ministers of Finance in Poznań, Poland, on the sidelines of the 14th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, and highlighted that the engagement of finance ministers in the fight against climate change is essential.
3 December 2008: At a side event held during the UN Climate Change Conference in Poznan, Poland, two least developed countries shared their experience in integrating climate change risks into various sectors, including agriculture and health through the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF).
2 December 2008: The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced it will provide approximately EUR 100 million to the Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM Bank) to provide partial financing for investments that will contribute to the mitigation of climate change.
4 December 2008: The International Conference on Financing for Development to Review the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus, attended by 92 countries, expressed its “deep concern that the international community is now challenged by the severe impact on development of multiple, interrelated global crises and challenges,” highlighting increased food insecurity, volatile energy and commodity prices, climate change and a global financial crisis.
3 December 2008: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released an advance copy of “Public Finance Mechanisms to Mobilise Investment in Climate Change Mitigation.” UNEP's Division of Technology, Industry and Economics, under its Sustainable Energy Finance Initiative, commissioned the report as a contribution to the UNFCCC Secretariat Technical Paper “Investment and Financial Flows to Address Climate Change: An Update.”
