IMF Recommends Fiscal Instruments and Financial Support to Transform Global Energy System [viewed]

31 March 2011: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a factsheet on "Climate Change and the IMF," which suggests that stabilizing global atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases will require a dramatic transformation of the entire global energy system, and recommends fiscal instruments to internalize environmental costs and large-scale and predictable financial assistance for developing countries to support action on climate change.

Global Green Growth Institute to Open Regional Office in UAE, Collaborate with IRENA [viewed]

13 March 2011: The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), launched in 2010 to promote environmentally sustainable economic growth, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Foreign Affairs to establish a Middle East and North Africa regional office in Abu Dhabi's Masdar City and to develop joint capacity-building programs.

Event: ITU Sixth Symposium on ICTs, the Environment and Climate Change [viewed]

This symposium is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The symposium will focus on the agenda on using information and communication technologies (ICTs) to monitor climate change, and mitigate and adapt to its effects. The symposium will focus on the issue of ICTs, the environment and climate change in Africa, and the needs of developing countries. Topics to be discussed include: mitigation and adaptation to climate change; e-waste; disaster planning; cost-effective ICT technologies; methodologies for the environmental impact assessment of ICTs; and challenges and opportunities in the transition to a green and resource efficient economy. The Symposium will be preceded by a Training Seminar on Conformity and Interoperability for Africa, to be held from 4-6 July 2011, at the same venue.

LDC Eminent Persons Group Releases Report [viewed]

29 March 2011: The UN Secretary-General's Eminent Persons Group on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) has released its report, titled “Compact for Inclusive Growth and Prosperity.” The report finds that the structural limitations of LDCs must be addressed in order to close the gap between LDCs and the rest of the world, and outlines objectives and targets for a new Programme of Action (PoA), including on small island developing States (SIDS) and climate change.
