March 2013: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) has released a report titled “An economic analysis of ecosystem-based adaptation and engineering options for climate change adaptation in Lami Town, Fiji.” Building on a vulnerability and adaptation assessment of Lami Town, the report presents a cost-benefit analysis of four adaptation scenarios.
13 March 2013: The Global Water Partnership (GWP) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have launched an Integrated Drought Management Programme (IDMP). The Programme was announced on the sidelines of the High-Level Meeting on National Drought Policy (HMNDP), and it focuses on building drought resilience to support global poverty reduction.
12 March 2013: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), in cooperation with the UN-Water Decade Programme on Capacity Development (UNW-DPC), have signed a framework of cooperation and launched a project on capacity-building in support of national drought management policies (NDMPs).
12 March 2013: The High-Level Meeting on National Drought Policy (HMNDP), organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), among other partners, is taking place from 11-15 March 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. The HMNDP brings together world leaders, government decision makers, development agencies, and leading scientists and researchers to discuss drought preparedness and management policies.
13 March 2013: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have launched a global campaign on drought preparedness and risk management. The Campaign was inaugurated on 13 March, during the High-Level Meeting on National Drought Policy (HMNDP) in Geneva, Switzerland.
11 March 2013: Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique and Zimbabwe are addressing drought-adaptation and climate change through an ongoing UN Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) program, titled “Coping with Drought and Climate Change.” The three-year program aims to increase the use of drought-adaptation farming techniques and coping mechanisms and to facilitate sharing of experience and knowledge among the four countries.
7 March 2013: The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has announced that representatives of UN agencies, funds and programmes have agreed to the UN Plan of Action on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) for Resilience. The Plan will accelerate the integration of DRR into all UN country-level operations.
6 March 2013: Addressing the Special Thematic Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Water and Disasters, convened by the UN Secretary-General, the UN Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB) and the High Level Expert Panel on Water and Disaster (HLEP/UNSGAB), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underscored the need to reach a “global, legally binding climate change agreement by 2015.”
6 March 2013: In the context of the upcoming High-Level Meeting on National Drought Policy to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 11-15 March 2013, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is highlighting a collection of tools and outputs of its research centers that are contributing to more effective responses to drought.
6 March 2013: The Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS) and its technical institution, AGRHYMET Regional Center, have launched a new platform dedicated to climate change and sustainable land management.
