CBD Secretariat Calls for Input on New and Emerging Issues, Climate Change-Related Matters [viewed]

CBD17 February 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued a series of notifications calling for views and information on new and emerging issues to be considered by the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), the potential impacts of geoengineering on biodiversity, and other climate change-related activities, including experiences with ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

Asia-Pacific Countries to Jointly Address Hydro-Meteorological Disasters [viewed]

logos_escap_typhoon13 February 2015: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) hosted a meeting during which representatives from 17 countries agreed to work together to build resilience to hydro-meteorological disasters through enhanced regional cooperation, and to share knowledge, review scientific and technological advances, and identify gaps across the region. The joint session of the ESCAP/World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Typhoon Committee (TC) and the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC) was the first time the two groups met jointly in 18 years.

Report Highlights Actions to Limit Disaster Risk in ACP Countries [viewed]

logo-acpc-small12 February 2015: The Secretariat of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States has published a study that provides a comprehensive view of the risks faced across its member countries and efforts to reduce them. The ‘ACP Compendium of Risk Knowledge,' reveals that disaster risk in ACP countries is higher than in other regions, with 12 countries from Sub-Saharan Africa and one from the Caribbean among the 20 most-at-risk in the world.

World Bank Supports DRR in Timor-Leste, Mongolia [viewed]

Worldbanklogo6 February 2015: The World Bank signed a three-year US$2.7 million grant agreement to finance the Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) project along the Dili-Ainaro Road Corridor in Dili, Timor-Leste. Together with the National Disaster Management Agency (NEMA) and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), it also hosted a training programme on ‘Disaster Risk Reduction' in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Structured Expert Dialogue on 2013-2015 Review Completes its Work [viewed]

UNFCCC9 February 2015: The 2nd meeting of the fourth session of the structured expert dialogue (SED 4-2) took place in conjunction with the eighth part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action. At its final meeting, the SED completed its work by addressing, in a balanced manner, all remaining inputs to the 2013–2015 review, focusing on information sources other than those of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

UNDP, UNFPA, UNOPS Executive Board Highlights Critical Year for Sustainable Development [viewed]

The 36-member Board provides intergovernmental support to and supervision of UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS activities.

FAO, Malawi to Protect Farmers from Severe Flooding [viewed]

fao-malawi28 January 2015: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is working with the Government of Malawi on a US$16 million plan to protect farmers from severe flooding, which has destroyed fields and homes, washed away animals and crops, and is threatening food security in the affected areas, including with disease outbreaks that could affect surviving livestock.
