Pacific Forum Highlights Urban Challenges as Priority Development Issue [viewed]

UN-HABITAT7 April 2015: The Fourth Pacific Urban Forum (PUF 4) highlighted urban challenges as a priority issue for development, focusing on the areas of social equity, urban economy, environment and governance. Outcomes will feed into Asia-Pacific regional input to the Habitat III conference, which will convene in Quito, Ecuador, in October 2016, as well as to ongoing discussions of the post-2015 development agenda. The Forum preceded the Sixth Asia-Pacific Urban Forum (APUF 6), which will take place in May 2015.

World Meteorological Day 2015 Highlights Climate Knowledge for Climate Action [viewed]

‘Smart Tree-Invest' Promotes Climate-Smart, Tree-Based Agriculture in Viet Nam [viewed]

WCDRR Adopts Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

wcdrr_meeting19 March 2015: Representatives from 187 countries have adopted the ‘Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030,' making it the first major agreement of the post-2015 development agenda. The Framework, which was adopted following a marathon round of negotiations at the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) held in Sendai, Japan, includes seven targets and four priorities for action.

Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction Opens in Sendai, Japan [viewed]

UNISDR Assessment: US$250-300 Billion/Year Lost From Disasters [viewed]

GAR154 March 2015: According to the 2015 Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (GAR15), economic losses from disasters amount to US$250-300 billion each year. The report, prepared by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, estimates that an annual investment of US$6 billion in disaster risk management would generate US$360 billion over the next 15 years through avoided losses.

Event: Indicators and Data for Climate Resilient Development: From Data to Information and Knowledge to Policy Actions [viewed]

This workshop aims to identify a core set of indicators and data sets for gauging climate resilient development to enable measurement in areas such as natural hazards, vulnerability, adaptive capacity, mitigation, resilience and development. Key topics for discussion include: vulnerability to climate change, adaptive capacity and resilience; targets and indicators post 2015; development; and natural hazards related to climate change. The European Commission's (EC) Joint Research Centre Institute for Environment and Sustainability (JRC-IES) and the Climate Change Unit of the Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO C2) are organizing the workshop as part of efforts by the Global Climate Change Alliance's Flagship Initiative (GCCA+) to strengthen policy dialogue and cooperation on climate change issues.
