UN/ISDR Highlights Role of Disaster Reduction in Preventing Climate Displacement [viewed]

19 January 2011: A release by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) highlights that disaster risk reduction (DRR) is key to preventing climate displacement. It notes that human displacement spurred by the “domino effect of climate change” is becoming a major preoccupation of the international community, drawing links among the work of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), UN/ISDR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

WMO Highlights Importance of Radio Frequency Bands for Climate Observations [viewed]

WMO16 January 2012: In its submission to the World Radiocommunication Conference, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) underscores the high dependence of radio frequency bands of weather forecasts, disaster warnings and climate monitoring. WMO warns that increasing pressure on the use of radio spectrum from wireless technology and other applications could hamper Earth observations, as well as efforts to understand and predict climate change.

FAO Identifies Opportunities for Climate-smart Agriculture Investments in Africa [viewed]

FAO15 January 2012: Amid the challenge of increasing food production in Africa to meet demand for a growing population and increasing impacts of climate change on food security, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a report that assesses the potential for climate-smart investments of the National Agriculture and Food Security Investment Plans (NAFSIPs) of 14 African countries.

Newly Elected ECOSOC President Outlines Priorities [viewed]

10 January 2012: Slovak Ambassador Miloš Koterec has been elected to serve as President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Addressing the Council in New York, US, after his election, Koterec called for a new approach to development, including changing old perceptions about development and finding new ways to optimize cooperation among donor and aid recipient countries.

Event: Disaster Risk Reduction: A Matter of Good Governance [viewed]

The Organization of American States (OAS), as a co-sponsor of the World Congress on Justice, Governance and Law for Environmental Sustainability, which will convene in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 1-3 June 2012, is conducting a series of "hemispheric dialogues" on sustainable development themes intended to generate recommendations on institutions and governance for sustainable development for both the Congress and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The seventh in the series, co-sponsored by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), will seek to generate recommendations on improving governance in risk management and emergency legislation. Future dialogues will address biodiversity, and improving the environmental performance of the private sector.

UNGA Adopts Climate Decisions [viewed]

22 December 2011: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted all 42 draft resolutions and four draft decisions submitted to it by the Second Committee (Economic and Financial). On climate, the adopted texts address disaster reduction and “protection of global climate for present and future generations on humankind.”
