WMO Reports on 2015 Arctic Sea Ice Extent, Global Mean Temperatures [viewed]

WMO22 September 2015: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has reported on the issuance by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) of a preliminary announcement stating that Arctic sea ice reached its minimum extent for 2015 on 11 September at 4.41 million square kilometers (1.70 million square miles), the fourth lowest minimum since satellite records began at the end of the 1970s. According to WMO, this reinforces a long-term downward trend in Arctic ice extent, while in the Antarctic, sea ice extent is average, in contrast with recent years when Antarctic winter extents reached record high levels.

EEA Assesses Role of Green Infrastructure in Mitigating Natural Hazards [viewed]

EEA21 September 2015: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has published a report highlighting the potential of green infrastructure in mitigating the impacts of weather- and climate change-related natural hazards. The report, titled 'Exploring Nature-Based Solutions: The Role of Green Infrastructure in Mitigating the Impacts of Weather- and Climate Change-Related Natural Hazards,' notes the definition of “green infrastructure” as “a strategically planned network of high-quality green spaces.”

Event: First Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism [viewed]

This first meeting of the Executive Committee of the UNFCCC Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage Associated with Climate Change Impacts is expected to discuss: vision and expectations of the Committee; rules of procedure of the Committee; two-year workplace of the Committee and the delivery of activities; arrangements for the operationalization of the Mechanism; and the annual report of the Executive Committee. The Loss and Damage Mechanism was established at the 19th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 19) in Warsaw, Poland, in 2013.

Pacific Islands Development Forum Adopts Suva Declaration on Climate Change [viewed]

pidf4 September 2015: Leaders of the Pacific Islands Development Forum, emphasizing their "grave distress" over climate change, are calling for increased support for adaptation measures and the creation of a Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) regional task force on climate financing. The leaders called for these and other actions in the 'Suva Declaration on Climate Change,' adopted at the Third Pacific Islands Development Forum Summit of Leaders (PIDF 3).
