20 December 2010: In a plenary session held on 20 December 2010, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the Report of its Second Committee on sustainable development (A/65/436), which includes draft resolutions on "Protection of global climate for present and future generations of humankind" and "International Strategy for Disaster Reduction."

Event: Informal Thematic Debate of the General Assembly on Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

This informal thematic debate aims to promote understanding on how effective investment policies, practices and sustainable urban management can reduce risk and exposure to disasters. Special focus will be on rapidly expanding urban areas, where risk, population and economic assets are concentrated. Building on the High-level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) (September 2010, New York), which acknowledged that disaster risk reduction and increasing resilience to natural hazards can accelerate the achievement of the MDGs, the debate will underscore the linkages between disaster risk reduction, poverty eradication and sustainable development. The Panel will include two interactive panel discussions with high-level experts. The concept paper and draft programme for the debate were issued by General Assembly President Joseph Deiss on 21 January 2011.

Event: World Water Day 2011 [viewed]

The objective of World Water Day 2011 is to focus international attention on the impact of rapid urban population growth, industrialization and uncertainties caused by climate change, conflicts and natural disasters on urban water systems. This year's theme, "Water for cities: responding to the urban challenge," aims to spotlight and encourage governments, organizations, communities, and individuals to actively engage in addressing the defy of urban water management.

Adaptation Fund Board Approves Funding for Two Projects [viewed]

15 December 2010: The Adaptation Fund Board concluded its 12th session in Cancun, Mexico, back-to-back with the Cancun Climate Change Conference. Board members approved funding for projects in Nicaragua and Pakistan, and for five concepts, from the Cook Islands, Ecuador, El Salvador, Georgia and the Maldives, for financing at its next session.

14 December 2010: EU ministers for agriculture met in Brussels, Belgium, on 13-14 December 2010, to discuss a new agricultural policy, while the Council of EU Ministers on General Affairs met in Brussels, Belgium, on 14 December 2010, to discuss options for an enhanced and cost-effective European disaster response.

Event: Anglophone African Regional "Writeshop" [viewed]

This "writeshop" is being organized to support developing country researchers in their efforts to produce publications on disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change. The workshop will address topics that are relevant to climate change adaptation and the 2011 Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction. Papers selected for the writeshop should focus on the themes of enabling environments, governance and ecosystem services. Applications are due on 31 December 2010.

European Commission Unveils Proposed Strategy for Danube Region [viewed]

9 December 2010: The European Commission has released a proposal for an EU Strategy for the Danube Region, aimed at developing sustainable growth and environmental protection. By establishing a framework for long-term cooperation on a wide range of issues, the Strategy is expected to contribute to improving sustainable transport, linking energy systems, protecting the environment, preserving water resources and stimulating business.
