World Bank Publishes Study on Climate Change Impacts in North African Cities [viewed]

4 June 2011: The World Bank led a study on “Climate Change Adaptation and Natural Disasters Preparedness in the Coastal Cities of North Africa,” which estimates that the economic impacts of climate change in Alexandria, Casablanca and Tunis will be more than $1 billion each between now and 2030.

"Lessons For Future Action" Ends with Adoption of MOU between SPREP and 5C's [viewed]

26 May 2001: A conference on "Lessons for Future Action," which took place in Apia, Samoa, emphasized the urgency of climate change adaptation and future decisions affecting small island developing States (SIDS), given the threat of natural disasters. At the end of the Conference, the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP) and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (5C's) adopted a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

UN/ISDR Launches Media Handbook on Reporting About Disasters [viewed]

World Meteorological Congress Reappoints WMO Secretary-General [viewed]

25 May 2011: The World Meteorological Congress reappointed Michel Jarraud for a four-year term as the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The Congress also elected David Grimes (Canada) as President, Antonio Divino Moura (Brazil) as First Vice-President, Mieczyslaw Ostojski (Poland) as Second Vice-President, and Abdalah Mokssit (Morroco) as Third Vice-President.

Event: Eighth Session of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission's Regional Committee for the Western Indian Ocean (IOCWIO-VIII) [viewed]

The agenda for this session includes a presentation of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Draft Priorities and Implementation Strategies for 2012-2013 related to: prevention and reduction of the impacts of natural hazards; mitigation of and adaptation to climate change and variability; safeguarding the health of ocean ecosystems; World Heritage Sites; and management procedures and policies leading to the sustainability of coastal and ocean environment and resources.
