11 August 2009: Speaking in Incheon, Republic of Korea, at the opening of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) office and the UN/ISDR Education and Training Institute for Urban Risk Reduction, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed that “climate risk is adding a new dimension to disaster risk” and that rapid urban growth is increasing vulnerability.
6 August 2009: The 40th Pacific Islands Forum convened in Cairns, Australia, from 5-6 August 2009, and concluded with a call by Pacific leaders to action on climate change.
5 August 2009: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) organized a meeting of the network on Sustainable Energy, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management to discuss national and sectoral climate change strategies.
27 July 2009: Speaking in Ulaanbaatar during his official visit to Mongolia, and in the presence of the Mongolian President, the Foreign Minister and the Vice Speaker of Parliament, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed the urgency of climate adaptation measures for the most vulnerable.
24 July 2009: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released the June edition of its newsletter titled “World Climate News,” which focuses on a Global Framework for Climate Services, the major expected outcome of the third World Climate Conference (WCC-3). WMP is organizing WCC-3, which will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 31 August-4 September 2009.
23 July 2009: Speakers at the General Segment of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), on 23 July 2009, noted that climate change presents an additional global challenge “for which extraordinary resources are needed,” and that the financial architecture dealing with climate change should be efficient, effective and equitable.
16 July 2009: On 8 July 2009, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which reflects shared concerns about climate change issues and the relation between climate and meteorological aspects on the one hand, and hunger, nutrition and food security on the other.
13 July 2009: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is seeking disaster reduction experts for lead author and review editor roles.
9 July 2009: The High-Level Segment of the 2009 substantive session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which met from 6-9 July 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland, concluded its consideration of current global and national trends and their impact on social development, including health, and adopted a Ministerial Declaration that highlights current and emerging challenges that are inter-twined with public health issues, including climate change.
9 July 2009: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has reached an agreement with Qualcomm Incorporated to help improve emergency communications for disaster preparedness and response.
