13 May 2009: UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Executive Secretary Luc Gnacadja told a press conference at UN Headquarters in New York, US, that the convergence of the global food, fuel, financial and economic crises, against a backdrop of climate change, present an opportunity for action to reshape the development agenda and should not be wasted.

21 April 2009: Climate change featured heavily on the agenda of the second day of deliberations at the eighth session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF8), currently convening at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The central focus of the discussion was the role of forests in a future climate regime.
2 April 2009: The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing a total of EUR 220 million in three operations that will contribute to the mitigation of climate change, within the objectives of the China Climate Change Framework Loan (CCCFL), signed with the People's Republic of China in November 2007.
22 March 2009: On the occasion of World Water Day, which was observed on 22 March 2009, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) highlighted the potential benefits of investing in the world's freshwaters, including the potential benefits to the global economic recovery and to accelerating a response to climate change.
27 February 2009: The Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting (IPM) for the 17th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD17) took place from 23-27 February 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The IPM's role was to provide a forum to discuss policy options and possible actions to enable the implementation of measures and policies concerning agriculture, rural development, land, drought, desertification and Africa – the thematic issues under consideration during the CSD16/CSD17 two-year “implementation cycle.”
February 2009: The UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) Secretariat has posted additional documents in preparation for its eighth session, which will convene from 20 April-1 May 2009, in New York, US. These include discussion papers submitted by the Major Groups, and advance unedited reports on, inter alia: forests and climate change; forest degradation and desertification; and recommendations for forests in a changing environment.
23 February 2009: Speakers at the opening session of the Intersessional Preparatory Meeting (IPM) for the 17th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD17) highlighted linkages between climate change and CSD17's thematic cluster of issues: agriculture, Africa, drought, desertification, land and rural development. The IPM is meeting in New York, US, from 23-27 February 2009.
13 February 2009: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has submitted to the fifth Session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 5) a proposal stressing the need to include in the UNFCCC negotiation agenda practical approaches, such as biochar-related (charcoal) mitigation, focusing on increased land productivity.
10 February 2009: The High-Level Meeting on African Agriculture in the 21st Century - Meeting the Challenges, Making a Sustainable Green Revolution, which convened from 9-10 February, in Windhoek, Namibia, adopted a declaration in which participants called for, among other measures, support to help African farmers adapt to climate change.
