UNCCD COP 10 Adopts Decisions on GM Governance, Scientific Advice and Indicators [viewed]

21 October 2011: Delegates at the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 10), which convened from 10-21 October 2011, in Changwon City, Republic of Korea, adopted 40 decisions, including on addressing the governance of the Convention's Global Mechanism (GM), scientific advice, and performance and impact indicators.

Tablet Computer Programme Reduces Paper Consumption during UNCCD COP 10 [viewed]

21 October 2011: During the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 10), which took place in Gyeongnam Province, Republic of Korea, the UNCCD Secretariat partnered with the provincial government and SK Telecom to loan 1000 Android-based Samsung Galaxy Tablet personal computers to conference participants. The tablets permitted easy access to official documents and the daily journal along with a variety of other material.

UNGA Second Committee Highlights Challenges of Climate Change and Desertification, Looks Ahead to Rio+20 [viewed]

3 November 2011: The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) concluded its general discussion on sustainable development, with a number of speakers referring to the challenges of drought, desertification, climate change and land degradation. Delegates also looked ahead to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), expressing support and some reservations about the “green economy.”

ICID+19 Develops Declaration of Niamey on Drylands [viewed]

October 2011: Approximately one hundred participants, scientists and policymakers from Africa, Brazil, Argentina and France, as well as representatives from international organizations, met in Niamey, Niger, from 24-25 October 2011, at the “Fight Against Desertification in Africa” conference, also known as ICID+19 Africa.

WMO Symposium Focuses on Improving Drought Information Systems [viewed]

WMO11 November 2011: The International Symposium on Integrated Drought Information Systems aimed to help countries, regions and communities move toward approaches that embrace drought preparedness and mitigation. Participants focused on the need for more coordinated polices to manage the risks of drought.

Land Day 5 Discusses Zero Net Land Degradation Target [viewed]

6 December 2011: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), in partnership with the Department of Environmental Affairs, South Africa, and the World Agroforestry Center, convened Land Day 5 in parallel to the Durban Climate Change Conference. Participants at the one-day event discussed the climate benefits from a sustainable development goal for zero net land degradation.

ITTO, UNCCD Sign MoU on Dry Tropical Forests [viewed]

8 December 2011: Emmanuel Ze Meka, Executive Director of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), and Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on restoration and sustainable management of dry tropical forests.
