LPAA Transport Event Launches Electro-Mobility Declaration, Freight Action Plan, Other Initiatives [viewed]

lpaa3 December 2015: Participants at the ‘Focus on Transport' event launched ten transport-climate action initiatives and agreed on the 'Paris Declaration on Electro-Mobility and Climate Change & Call to Action.' The event convened as part of the Lima-Paris Action Agenda (LPPA) at the sidelines of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC.

UN Reports on GHG Emissions, Showcases Steps Towards Climate Neutrality [viewed]

UN Reports on GHG Emissions27 November 2015: The UN emitted 2,093,572 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2015, according to a report titled ‘Moving Towards a Climate Neutral UN.' The report provides an update on progress in implementing the 2007 Climate Neutral UN Strategy, which commits all UN agencies, funds and programmes to move towards climate neutrality within the context of greening the UN, including through reducing and offsetting emissions.

Montreal Protocol Parties Set Roadmap for HFC Amendment [viewed]

Delegates huddle outside the plenary room on the last day of MOP 278 November 2015: The 27th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (MOP 27) adopted decisions on essential-use exemptions (EUEs) and critical-use exemptions (CUEs), and a Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) report on alternatives to ozone depleting substances (ODS), among other substantive and procedural decisions. Following protracted negotiations, Parties also agreed to a road map for negotiating an amendment on the feasibility and ways of managing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

OECD Publishes 2015 Indicators Report 'Environment at a Glance' [viewed]

OECD_NEW26 October 2015: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has released its 'Environment at a Glance 2015,' which updates environmental, socio-economic and sectoral indicators for OECD countries. The publication, which provides an overview of OECD country progress on major environmental issues, is intended to inform policy development and evaluation.

Event: First International Forum on Public-Private Partnerships for Sustainable Development [viewed]

The first International Forum on Public-Private Partnerships for Sustainable Development will explore how public-private partnerships (PPPs) can contribute to sustainable development. The forum will focus on PPPs as tools to advance sustainable development at the local level, as impactful PPPs can be used not only for large-scale national projects, but also for smaller local-level projects. Amina Mohammed, UN Special Adviser on Post 2015 Development Planning, will give a keynote address. This forum will include plenary sessions on the role of PPPs in combating climate change and the specificities of PPPs at the local level, as well as technical workshops to learn about the legal and financial aspects of PPPs. It will also include a ‘Good Practices Forum,' organized with the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). In addition, the forum will provide the space to showcase examples of successful PPPs in the sectors of transport, energy, water supply and waste management. The Forum is being organized jointly by the Government of France, the Agglomeration of Annemasse and the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), in partnership with other UN agencies.

UNFCCC27 October 2015: The Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activity awards, which honor innovative, scalable and replicable climate actions from around the world, have been announced. The 16 selected initiatives come from around the world and a variety of sectors, highlighting inspiring mitigation and adaptation activities. The announcement of the 2015 Lighthouse Activities comes as Parties to the UNFCCC prepare to adopt a universal climate change agreement at the Paris Climate Change Conference in December 2015.

Senior Arctic Officials Advance Arctic Council Agenda [viewed]

Arctic Council23 October 2015: The Senior Arctic Official's meeting, which convened from 20-22 October 2015, in Anchorage, Alaska, brought together senior representatives from the eight Arctic States and the Permanent Participants (six organizations representing Arctic Indigenous peoples) to advance the work of the Arctic Council. The meeting was also the Council's first plenary meeting under US Chairmanship (2015-2017).

WHO Report: Reduce SLCPs to Protect Health [viewed]

WHO22 October 2015: The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a report for policymakers on reducing short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), such as black carbon, ozone, methane and carbon dioxide (CO2), which it says contribute to climate change and lead to more than seven million deaths linked to air pollution every year. Titled ‘Reducing global health risks through mitigation of short-lived climate pollutants,' the report recommends immediate actions by which countries, health and environment ministries, and cities can reduce emissions, protect health and avoid illness and premature deaths.

US, Pakistan Form Clean Energy Partnership [viewed]

In the statement, US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif reinforce their commitment to an enduring US-Pakistan partnership, a prosperous Pakistan and a more stable region.
