Event: Fourteenth Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF-14) [viewed]

This meeting is being organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in conjunction with its twenty-seventh session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC27/GMEF) to be held from 18-22 February 2013 in Nairobi, Kenya. The objective of the Forum is to facilitate preparations of major groups and stakeholders towards the GC27/GMEF, which will hold ministerial-level consultations on emerging policy issues under the following themes: Implementing Rio+20: A strengthened environmental pillar of sustainable development; and Implementing a green economy as an important tool for achieving sustainable development.

IICA, GIZ Help Costa Rica Prepare NAMAs for Coffee, Waste and Public Transport Sectors [viewed]

23 November 2012: The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Germany's international cooperation agency (GIZ) and Costa Rica's Environment Ministry (MINAET) are assisting that country's coffee, solid waste management and public transport sectors in preparing Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMAs) for their sectors to gain financing for reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

BCIE Funds Study of Energy Generation from Porcine Wastes in Honduras [viewed]

12 November 2012: The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) is partially funding a feasibility study, by the firm BioenergyR4E Choloma, of a project for a power generation plant using manure from pig farms as its fuel.

MOP 24 Adopts 19 Substantive Decisions, Fails to Reach Agreement on HFC Amendment [viewed]

16 November 2012: The 24th Meeting of the Parties (MOP 24) to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer adopted 19 substantive and 11 procedural decisions. Decisions addressed, inter alia: the review by the Scientific Assessment Panel (SAP) of RC-316c; procedural issues related to the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) and its subsidiary bodies; budget; and data and compliance issues.

IPPC, Ozone Secretariat to Cooperate on Methyl Bromide Use [viewed]

IPPC14 November 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Ozone Secretariat and the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO)-based International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) have have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to improve methyl bromide management. Methyl bromide is an ozone depleting substance used to prevent the spread of pests and diseases.

UNESCO Holds Climate Change Reporting Workshop in Iran [viewed]

13 November 2012: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Tehran Office and the Iranian Association for Studies on the Information Society (IRASIS), with support from the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), held a workshop on climate change reporting. The workshop aimed to build the capacity of the media to better inform citizens.

UNEP Hosts Fumigation Training to Assist with Methyl Bromide Phase-Out in Africa [viewed]

UNEP10 October 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) convened phosphine fumigation training in Douala, Cameroon, from 8-10 October 2012. The training aimed to demonstrate available methyl bromide alternatives for the management of stored grain pests, and analyzed the application, efficacy, cost, availability, global warming potential, registration, phytotoxicity, and corrosiveness of alternatives.

London Convention Parties Express Concern over Ocean Fertilization [viewed]

IMO2 November 2012: The 34th Consultative Meeting of States parties to the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter, 1972 (London Convention), and to its 1996 Protocol (London Protocol), concluded with the release of an unanimous statement of concern regarding a reported incident of deliberate ocean fertilization activity off the west coast of Canada.

European Commission Publishes Kyoto Protocol Target Progress Report [viewed]

24 October 2012: The European Commission has released an annual report detailing progress in 2011 towards achieving the EU target under the Kyoto Protocol, while the European Environment Agency (EEA) has published an associated analysis of EU greenhouse gas (GHG) trends. The report on progress finds that EU GHG emissions have decreased for the 27 EU Member States by 2.5% in 2011.

ACP-MEAs Newsletter Focuses on Participation in the CDM and Carbon Finance [viewed]

September 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the European Commission have released the latest issue of the newsletter on the Multilateral Environment Agreements in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP MEAs) Project. The newsletter features a guest article by Mette Annelie Rasmussen and Miriam Hinostroza, UNEP Risø Centre, outlining efforts to “level the playing field” for the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and carbon finance.
