15 June 2012: The European Commission has initiated the search for the city that will win the title European Green Capital 2015. The title is awarded to a city that serves as a role model for others by providing environmentally-friendly urban living that is “fit for life.”
14 June 2012: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the World Bank and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), held a workshop to discuss Compact Cities: A Model for Sustainable Urban Development and Green Growth.
11 June 2012: The European Environment Ministers met in the Environment Council to adopt conclusions on setting the framework for the 7th EU Environment Action Programme (EAP) and on preparations for key biodiversity and climate meetings, among other items.
7 June 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved a Work Program of 84 projects and two programmatic approaches amounting to US$667.26 million in GEF project grants, and appointed Naoko Ishii (Japan) as the GEF's new Chairperson and CEO.
8 June 2012: World Oceans Day, celebrated on 8 June 2012, featured a panel discussion to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening for signature of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The Day aims to raise global awareness of the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with oceans.
7 June 2012: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released a report titled “Material Resources and Waste,” which finds that 20-30% of the resources consumed within the EU are produced beyond its borders. International trade, the report finds, allows EU consumption and production to impact ecosystems and human health across the globe.
6 June 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released the findings of the fifth edition of the Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-5) on the eve of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). GEO-5 assessed 90 environmental goals and objectives, and found that significant progress has been made in only four.
5 June 2012: The 7th International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Symposium on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), the Environment and Climate Change concluded with the adoption of a Declaration calling on world leaders and other stakeholders attending the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) to reach agreement on how to use ICTs to achieve the global green agenda.
5 June 2012: Energy Globe has launched a global online campaign on energy efficiency and best practices, with support from the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
5 June 2012: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released the 2012 edition of its "Signals" report, titled "Building the Future we Want," which focuses on the impacts of consumption and production patterns, and ways to reduce their impact on the environment.
