Ozone Secretariat Releases Paper that Proposes Including Ozone in SDGs [viewed]

25 Montreal Protocol21 June 2013: The Ozone Secretariat has released an information document, titled 'Embedding ozone protection in the sustainable development agenda,' that reviews historical and current sustainable development processes, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), introduces initiatives under way to articulate a new development agenda, including on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and discusses the role of ozone in future SDGs.

Event: GEF Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) the Dominican Republic [viewed]

This meeting seeks to promote exercises on national capacity development (NCSA), results-based management, monitoring and evaluation, as well as synergies in project design related to the biodiversity, climate, chemicals and desertification conventions. Participants will also hear updates on the GEF2020 Strategy and on the GEF-6 replenishment process. The targeted audience is GEF focal points, focal points from the main conventions, representatives from civil society and representatives from the GEF Secretariat and the GEF Agencies.

Event: 46th GEF Council Meeting and GEF Assembly [viewed]

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly will be held back-to-back with the 46th GEF Council meeting in Mexico. A report on the host city, Cancún, was considered at the 45th Council meeting in November 2013. The CSO Consultation, GEF Council and LDCF/SCCF Council Meetings will convene from 25-27 May, with the Council meeting beginning on 25 May and overlapping for half a day, on 27 May, with the CSO Consultation. The Assembly will convene from 28-30 May. All 183 member nations, including South Sudan – the GEF's newest member – will gather for the Assembly. The GEF Council meets twice a year, while the Assembly meets every four years to take major decisions, including endorsement of the next four-year GEF replenishment package.

44th GEF Council Meeting Approves US$369.82 Million Work Program [viewed]

gef4420 June 2013: The 44th Meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council adopted a Work Program amounting to US$369.82 million, comprising 48 projects on biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), as well as multi-focal area projects.

UNIDO Technology Summit Discusses Leapfrogging High-GWP Refrigerants [viewed]

UNIDO4 June 2013: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), together with market development company Shecco, convened the ATMOsphere Technology Summit, which brought together 150 representatives from developing and developed countries who explored the possibilities of leapfrogging high global warming substances in the Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning, Refrigeration (HVAC&R) and foam sectors.

US, China to Collaborate on HFCs Phase Down [viewed]

UNEP Launches Global Sustainable Consumption and Production Clearinghouse [viewed]

scp21 May 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in its role as Secretariat of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP 10YFP), has launched The Global SCP Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse uses social networking principles to create a “one-stop hub” for SCP knowledge and cooperation.

WSIS Forum Recognizes Role of ICTs in Smart Climate Monitoring, Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

ITU logo17 May 2013: Participants at the annual World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum agreed on outcome documents that highlight discussions on, inter alia: smart climate change monitoring; women's empowerment; information and communication technologies (ICTs) innovations and standards; and cyberspace security. Participants also considered ICTs and post-2015 goals, reviewed the Implementation of the WSIS Outcomes and produced a Statement on the WSIS+10 Visioning.

ICT Symposium Adopts Roadmap on Smart, Sustainable Cities [viewed]

ITU logo9 May 2013: Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are critical in creating smart sustainable cities and addressing climate change, according to participants at the Eighth International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Symposium on ICTs, the Environment and Climate Change. Participants adopted a 'Turin Roadmap' that calls on ITU to promote smart technologies in cities and develop key performance indicators to assess ICTs impacts in cities and countries around the world.
