UNISDR Spearheads Training for Local Governments on Sendai Framework for DRR [viewed]

UNISDRS24 July 2015: The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has begun training programmes for local governments, focusing on developing strategies based on action priorities outlined in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), agreed in March 2015, which emphasizes the role of local governments in achieving DRR and a reduction in the loss of lives, livelihoods and health over the next 15 years.

Africa Kick Starts Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction Implementation [viewed]

unisdr_au23 July 2015: African Governments gathered in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from 20-23 July 2015, to launch a global drive to apply the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). Representatives from 37 African Governments agreed to work together towards substantial reductions in disaster losses over the next 15 years, including reductions in mortality, the numbers of people affected and the economic damage caused by natural and human-induced hazards.

Eye on Earth Launches Data Innovation, Visualization, Blogging Competitions [viewed]

Eye on Earth16 July 2015: The organizers of the Eye on Earth Summit have announced three data innovation challenges for which the finalists will have the opportunity to present their ideas at the Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The three competitions launched are the Data Innovation Showcase, Data Visualization Challenge and Blogging Competition, all of which support the Summit in its focus on using data to secure a better future for the planet.

Marshall Islands Submits INDC [viewed]

marshall-flag21 July 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has announced that the Marshall Islands is the first small island developing State (SIDS) Party to formally submit its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC), which sets out a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target of 32% below 2010 levels by 2025. The INDC also includes an indicative target of reducing emissions 45% below 2010 levels by 2030. The submission from the Marshall Islands brings the total number of Parties to submit an INDC to 48.

UNESCO Reports on Climate Change Education Activities [viewed]

UNESCO21 July 2015: A report by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reviews the organization's recent work to support education policymakers and educators of teachers to incorporate climate change into their curriculum. The report, titled 'Not Just Hot Air: Putting Climate Change Education into Practice,' presents results and lessons learned from country pilots in the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Mauritius, Tuvalu and South Africa.

IITA, UCLA Partner on Congo Basin Research [viewed]

iisdrs_FfD316 July 2015: The Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD3) has concluded with the adoption of the Outcome Document of the Conference, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA). In support of the AAAA, a number of significant partnerships were launched during FfD3, including: the Addis Tax Initiative, which will support strengthening domestic tax systems; the Global Financing Facility in Support of Every Woman Every Child, which brings together countries, donors and the private sector; and the Commission on Financing Global Education.

IRENA Conference Launches Martinique Action Plan for Renewables Deployment on SIDS [viewed]

IRENA14 July 2015: A conference organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has launched an action plan to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy in small island developing states (SIDS). The Martinique Action Plan outlines practical steps for deploying renewable energy resources and technologies in SIDS. It also seeks to demonstrate commitment of 27 SIDS and 19 development partners to the IRENA of SIDS Lighthouses Initiative in the run-up to the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference.
