February 2015 Climate Finance Update [viewed]

afdb_eib_idb_cif_wbank and_citiFebruary 2015: During February 2015, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank and the Citi corporation reported on funding and new financial instruments. IDB, the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and the World Bank launched publications on, inter alia, climate resilience, green growth and carbon pricing, and reported on a regional event in Asia.

Event: Seventh Africa Carbon Forum [viewed]

The Seventh Africa Carbon Forum (ACF) will focus on finance, development and investment opportunities related to climate change and of interest to project developers and policymakers. Participants will learn about international carbon market trends, opportunities under the Green Climate Fund (GCF), efforts to increase demand for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) credits and results-based financing opportunities. The Government of Morocco will host a high-level ministerial segment, during which African countries will have the opportunity to discuss expectations and planned contributions to the anticipated 2015 climate change agreement. ACF is jointly organized by the UNFCCC Secretariat, UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UNEP-DTU Partnership, World Bank, African Development Bank (AfDB) and International Emissions Trading Association (IETA).

Event: World Water Day 2015 [viewed]

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as the first World Water Day. In 2015, the theme for World Water Day is 'Water and Sustainable Development'. The Day will seek to encourage the exploration of how water links to all areas we need to consider to create the future we want. CCAC Meeting Opens in Kathmandu, Welcomes New Members [viewed]

IPCC Session Informed of Chair's Resignation, Agenda Focuses on Panel's Future [viewed]

IPCC24 February 2015: At the opening of the 41st session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 41), delegates were informed that, effective immediately, IPCC Chair Rajendra Pachauri had stepped down from his position. Pachauri sent a letter, dated 24 February 2015, to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon informing him of his decision to resign. Pachauri noted that the IPCC needs the time and full attention of the Chair in the immediate future, and that he is unable to provide this leadership at the current time. In response and prior to the opening of IPCC 41, the IPCC Bureau agreed to designate Vice-Chair Ismail El Gizouli as Acting IPCC Chair.

Asia-Pacific Countries to Jointly Address Hydro-Meteorological Disasters [viewed]

logos_escap_typhoon13 February 2015: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) hosted a meeting during which representatives from 17 countries agreed to work together to build resilience to hydro-meteorological disasters through enhanced regional cooperation, and to share knowledge, review scientific and technological advances, and identify gaps across the region. The joint session of the ESCAP/World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Typhoon Committee (TC) and the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC) was the first time the two groups met jointly in 18 years.

CIFOR Unveils Wetlands Protection Toolbox for Policy Makers and Practitioners [viewed]

CIFOR11 February 2015: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has launched a learning toolbox as part of its Sustainable Wetlands Adaptation Mitigation Program (SWAMP), which aims to support policy makers and practitioners “to begin the daunting task of compiling evidence and crafting policy” to protect tropical wetlands.

High-Level Event Explores Means of Implementation Priorities for FfD3, Post-2015 Processes [viewed]

69th Session of the UNGA10 February 2015: The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Sam Kutesa, convened a high-level thematic debate to discuss key elements of a renewed global partnership for sustainable development, as well as infrastructure development, and the role of parliaments, cities and local authorities in the implementation of the post-2015 development agenda. A President's Summary of the meeting, to be released by 18 February 2015, will serve as input for both the intergovernmental negotiations on the post-2015 development agenda and the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD3).
