Cities in Central Asia, Caucasus Join UNISDR Resilient Campaign [viewed]

UNISDR12 January 2015: Eight cities in Central Asia and the Caucasus have joined the UN campaign, ‘Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready,' which includes over 2,400 participants worldwide. The eight cities are: Noyemberyan and Berd in Armenia; Tbilisi and Gori in Georgia; Oskemen and Ridder in Kazakhstan; and Bishkek and Kara-Kol in Kyrgyzstan. By joining the campaign, the cities commit to strengthen community resilience by integrating disaster risk reduction (DRR) into local policies.

Event: Third International Conference on Natural Resource Management for Food and Rural Livelihoods [viewed]

Organized by the Soil Conservation Society of India in collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, this conference will address ways to boost agricultural productivity for food security and economic development, while conserving and restoring the natural resource base. Topics to be covered include: assessment, development and management of natural and human resources for livelihood and food security; integrated management of water and land resources to prevent land degradation and salinity related desertification; conservation agriculture systems for drylands, rainfed and irrigated areas; climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies including carbon sequestration in soils for different land use systems; and policy frameworks for capacity building to mitigate emerging problems in natural resource management. This is a 2015 International Year of Soils event.

Event: An Introduction to the What, Why and How of Forest Governance Assessment [viewed]

This World Bank e-institute online webinar explains the 3-pillar framework for forest governance developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Program on Forests (PROFOR). Targeting REDD+ and Forest Investment Program (FIP) practitioners, the webinar aims to increase understanding of forest governance, build capacity for conducting and assessing forest governance and identify opportunities for stakeholder engagement.

CIFOR Supports DRC Efforts to Protect and Restore Forests [viewed]

CIFORJanuary 2015: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released an overview of the Forests and Climate Change in the Congo (FCCC) project, which aims to support the efforts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in capacity building and applied research to reduce deforestation and forest degradation, and thereby mitigate climate change.

Event: South Asian Conference on Climate Change: Risks and Actions [viewed]

This conference, organized by the Water Resource Engineering Department of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, Pakistan, together with the Research and Development Foundation (RDF) of Pakistan, will seek to: provide a forum for sharing lessons and strengthening the participation of civil society and the public sector in climate change-related activities; strengthen collaboration among stakeholders on the issue of climate change and its impacts; and create linkages among organizations at various levels working on climate change.

Event: ICAO Environmental ​Seminars in the Middle East Region [viewed]

As part of a series of two environmental seminars held back-to-back in each region of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Aviation and Environment Seminar will be held from 23-24 March 2015, and the States' Action Plans Seminar will be held from 24-25 March 2015, in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), for the Middle East Region. The seminars are supporting ICAO member States in their efforts to institute climate-friendly aviation. The first seminar, intended for civil aviation, environment, energy, industry, civil society, academia, and National Action Plan (NAP) representatives, as well as the general public, will cover: aviation and environmental outlook, aircraft noise, local air quality, global emissions, sustainable alternative fuels, market-based measures, technology, operations, green airports, States' action plans, assistance to States and financing. The second seminar is for NAP Focal Points to learn about ICAO Guidance on State Action Plans; the Action Plan Emissions Reduction (APER) website, supporting documents and ICAO tools; assistance for the implementation of the Action Plan; and States' best practices.
