WMO Members cooperate for Beijing 2008 weather forecasts 5 August 2008: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

is coordinating efforts by the government of China and the organization of the

Games during the Beijing Olympics to provide timely and accurate weather

predictions and characterization of associated risk, which are critical to the

event.

The fifteenth Summit meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)3 August 2008: The fifteenth Summit meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), held from 2-3 August 2008, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, concluded with the adoption of the Colombo Declaration and the Colombo Statement on Food Security. In the Declaration, entitled “Partnership for Growth for Our People,” the Heads of State and Government reiterate the need for increased regional cooperation in tackling climate change, in particular for capacity building, the development of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects, and awareness raising.

CBD: Brazilian State of Parana Offsets Carbon Emissions of the CBD's Secretariat Operations [viewed]

State of Parana Delivers on Its Commitment to Offset Carbon Emissions of the Operations of the CBD Secretariat 1 August 2008: The Secretariat of the Convention on

Biological Diversity (CBD) has announced, in a notification, that the state

government of Parana in Brazil has delivered on its commitment to offset all

carbon emissions arising out of the CBD Secretariat's operations between the

ninth and the tenth Conference of the Parties (COP), including the travel of

funded party representatives to attend official CBD meetings, estimated at

around 10,200 tons of carbon equivalent.

ESCAP Joins 'Cool UN' Programme 1 August 2008: UN Secretary-General wore a casual outfit to kick off the “Cool UN” scheme, which seeks to curb the organization's greenhouse gas emissions, limit the use of air conditioning and save money for the UN. The UN Economic Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) premises in Bangkok, Thailand, which houses over a dozen of the Organization's entities, also joined the “Cool UN” scheme.

UN to Decrease Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Month of August [viewed]

Taking aim at climate change in the landmark United Nations building in New York, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today launched a new campaign, “Cool UN,”. Photo credit, United Nations

1 August 2008: The United Nations plans to decrease its

carbon footprint for the month of August by increasing the temperature in its

New York Headquarters and eliminating air conditioning on the weekends. The

initiative will result in an emissions decrease of the equivalent of 300 pounds

of carbon dioxide and, if the trial period is successful and the initiative is

extended, could save the UN roughly US$1 million annually.

UNEP Announces Climate Neutral Partnership with Norwegian Rock and Jazz Festivals [viewed]

Climate Neutral Network (CN Net) 21 July 2008:

The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Climate Neutral Network (CN Net)

announced that two Norwegian music festivals have joined the international

fight against climate change. The two festivals are the first music events to

sign on to CNNet, which aims to federate solutions and actions to realize a

low, even zero pollution, world.

World Bank: Countries Chosen as Forest Carbon Partnership Facility Members [viewed]

First Countries Named to Benefit from Forest Carbon Partnership Facility 21 July 2008: Fourteen

developing countries - Bolivia, Costa Rica, the Democratic Republic of Congo,

Gabon, Ghana, Guyana, Kenya, Lao PDR, Liberia, Madagascar Mexico, Nepal,

Panama, and Vietnam - will be beneficiaries of funding from the Forest Carbon

Partnership Facility (FCPF), launched at the Bali climate negotiations. The

FCPF partners donor countries, the World Bank, and developing countries in an

effort to build capacity for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest

degradation.
