Programme Document for ITTO/CBD Collaborative Initiative for Tropical Forest Biodiversity Released [viewed]

31 May 2011: The Programme Document for the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Collaborative Initiative for Tropical Forest Biodiversity is now available on the ITTO website. The document provides guidance for possible activities under the Initiative and ITTO members are invited to consider and approve the document, and convey their response to the ITTO Secretariat by 31 August 2011.

ILO and OECD Strengthen Cooperation [viewed]

Event: MEA Information and Knowledge Management Initiative Steering Committee Meeting [viewed]

Event: For Life, for the Future: Biosphere Reserves and Climate Change [viewed]

This conference is held on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme. It is organized by UNESCO-MAB, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation and the German Commission for UNESCO. The conference will bring together high-level political and scientific representatives, both from climate and nature conservation politics, from administration, science and practice from all over the world, including several ministers. The conference will demonstrate how more than 560 UNESCO biosphere reserves in over 100 countries, beyond conserving biodiversity, can contribute to effective climate change mitigation and adaptation. UNESCO biosphere reserves as model regions for sustainable development make available extensive experiences, for example on sustainable land use, green economies, conservation of ecosystem-services, as well as research and education.

SPC Hosts Training on Gender Mainstreaming in Climate Change and Adaptation Programmes [viewed]

27 May 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) hosted a training of trainers on gender mainstreaming in projects and programmes on adaptation and climate change in Suva, Fiji, from 16-18 May 2011. The training was organized by the Energy Programme of SPC's Economic Development Division (EDD) and attended by 13 participants, including representatives from community-based organizations.

UN/ISDR Launches Media Handbook on Reporting About Disasters [viewed]

26 May 2011: During the Third Session of the Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) launched a media handbook, titled "Disaster through a Different Lens,” which aims to assist journalists to cover disasters in ways to persuade national and local governments to invest more in disaster risk reduction (DRR) policies.

IEA Calls for Policy Analysis of Renewable Energies in Remote Areas and Islands [viewed]

Event: UNITAR/WTI Course on Trade and Climate Change [viewed]

This course is organized by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and World Trade Institute (WTI) as part of their suite of joint e-Learning courses on international trade policy and regulation. The aim of the course is to explore key legal and economic issues arising from the climate change debate, including the relationship between the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) that address climate change. It will also examine the legality under international trade rules, of domestic and international trade measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and measures designed to influence the behavior of trading partners. The course will begin on 20 June, and continue until 15 July.

GEF Council Adopts Decision to Broaden GEF Partnership, New Funds Pledged [viewed]

26 May 2011: The 40th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council has adopted a decision on broadening the GEF Partnership under Paragraph 28 of the GEF Instrument, which establishes criteria and accreditation procedures for allowing new entities into the Partnership during a pilot phase.
