Event: Fifth Caribbean Environment Forum and Exhibition (CEF 5), Second Caribbean Sustainable Energy Forum (CSEF 2), and 15th Annual Wider Caribbean Waste Management Conference (ReCaribe) [viewed]

These three events will be held simultaneously under the unified theme "Coping with Copenhagen: Water, Waste, Energy, Health..." to emphasize actions and strategies to address key Caribbean environmental issues against the backdrop of climate change. The CEF series on Caribbean health and environment has been organized by the Caribbean Community's (CARICOM) Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) biennially since 2000. The CSEF focuses on energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy security for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The annual ReCaribe has been organized since 1995 by Clean Islands International (CII) to discuss waste management issues in the wider Caribbean region. The combined event is being co-sponsored by the Jamaican Government, the Organization of American States (OAS), the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) Integrating Watershed and Coastal Area Management project (IWCAM), the Caribbean Renewable Energy Development Programme (CREDP), and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

UNECE and FAO to Develop Forest Communication Strategy [viewed]

7 June 2010: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has noted that forests cover over 44% of Europe's land area, having grown by 17 million hectares in the last 15 years, and is stressing the need to increase public awareness about opportunities for the sustainable use of wood.

World Environment Day Celebrated [viewed]

6 June 2010: UN agencies celebrated World Environment Day on 6 June 2010, under the theme “Many Species. One Planet. One Future.” The celebrations included a number of activities, such as the launch of "Greening the Blue," which aims to encourage UN agencies to become climate neutral, solar power activities in Rwanda, and a website devoted to informing youth about climate.

EU-Pakistan Summit Agrees Five-Year Cooperation Plan [viewed]

4 June 2010: The second EU-Pakistan Summit, which took place on 4 June 2010, in Brussels, Belgium, agreed to set in motion a five-year cooperation plan, with objectives and joint actions to be defined at future regular meetings, including on climate change and energy.

ILO Publishes Report on Recovery and Growth with Decent Work [viewed]

2 June 2010: Juan Somavia, International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General, presented his report to the 99th International Labour Conference, taking place from 2-18 June 2010, in Geneva, Switzerland. The report, titled "Recovery and Growth with Decent Work," identifies a number of vital and converging objectives for the agenda for policy dialogue and action on an employment-oriented framework for strong, sustainable and balanced growth.

Event: Seventh African Development Forum on Climate Change and Development [viewed]

The Seventh African Development Forum (ADF VII) on Climate Change and Development is being convened by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Development Bank (AfDB). The overall objective of the Forum is to raise awareness and mobilize effective commitment and actions on the part of all stakeholders and partners at all levels to effectively mainstream climate change concerns into development policies, strategies, programmes and practices in Africa. The Forum also aims to strengthen Africa's participation in international climate change negotiations with a view to ensuring adequate reflection of the continent's concerns and priorities in a post-2012 international climate change regime.
