Event: Least Developed Countries Training Workshop on Implementing National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs) [viewed]

This is the fourth of a series of five training workshops organized by the Least Developed Countries Group (LEG) in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and its agencies. The workshop is targeting Lusophone LDCs and one recently graduated Lusophone LDCs, comprising in total five parties to the UNFCCC. The workshop and materials will be entirely in Portuguese. The training aims to: provide technical support to Least Developed Country (LDC) teams in the design of an implementation strategy for the NAPAs, and to build capacity of these teams in the preparation and submission of project documents to the GEF under the LDF Fund (LDCF); and, where needed, to provide technical support to those LDC parties that are still preparing their NAPAs.

Model UN Conference Simulates IAEA's Atoms for Food Partnership [viewed]

5 August 2010: The Vienna International Model UN (VIMUN) conference, which took place at the Vienna International Centre in Austria from 2-5 August 2010, simulated the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors Meeting discussion of the topic "Atoms for Food: Against Growing Food Insecurity in the Light of Climate Change."

Event: Launch of UN Decade for Deserts and the Fight Against Desertification [viewed]

To promote actions that will protect the world's drylands from further deterioration and degradation into deserts, the United Nations will launch the Decade for Deserts and the Fight Against Desertification on 16 August 2010. The Decade will be launched during the opening of the 2nd International Conference on Climate, Sustainability and Development in Semi-arid Regions. The Decade of events are spearheaded by the Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in collaboration with the Department of Public Information (DPI) of the UN Secretariat in New York, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and other relevant UN bodies.

Event: Eighth International Conference of the African Association of Remote Sensing and the Environment [viewed]

This Conference is organized by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), together with the African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE), the Ethiopian Mapping Agency (EMA) and the GIS Society of Ethiopia (GSSE). It aims to bring together scholars and professionals from the African and international geo-spatial information science community to present latest achievements, discuss challenges and share experience. The Conference is organized around four themes: food and water security; energy resources; disaster risk reduction; and marine and coastal management.

Event: Climate Change Awareness Policy for Public Broadcasting [viewed]

This training meeting is organized by the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA) and it encompasses climate change journalism, broadcaster responsibility, programme evaluation and agreement on a universal template for internal broadcasting policy for 10 broadcasters. This training workshop is sponsored by the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), a multilateral forum in the UN system that seeks to mobilize the international community to discuss and promote media development in developing countries.

Event: UNITAR Workshop on Environmental Negotiations and Climate Change Diplomacy [viewed]

This Workshop is being organized by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Olof Palme Memorial Fund as part of UNITAR's 2010 Negotiation Series “Towards levelling the playing field.” It aims at equipping delegates, particularly from developing countries, least developed countries and small island States, with the skills and knowledge needed to perform efficiently in multilateral negotiations related to environmental sustainability and climate change.
