GEF CEO Announces Largest-Ever Financing for SIDS [viewed]

GEF4 September 2014: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Naoko Ishii has announced US$256 million in funding for projects on biodiversity, chemicals and wastes, forests and capacity building. The announcement was made on the sidelines of the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), during which the GEF also showcased its work with SIDS.

Samoa Partnerships Commitment4 September 2014: The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) took place from 1-4 September 2014, in Apia, Samoa, on the theme of ‘The Sustainable Development of SIDS Through Genuine and Durable Partnerships.' The Conference produced an outcome document, titled ‘SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway,' which was negotiated during the preparatory process at UN Headquarters in New York, US, and adopted during the closing plenary.

The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) announced a publication on the ADB's climate finance projects in the Asia-Pacific, and the World Bank highlighted its climate and disaster risk screening policies.

UNFCCC Announces Climate Heroes Documentary [viewed]

UNFCCC3 September 2014: As part of its Momentum for Change initiative, the UNFCCC Secretariat will launch a documentary on climate action during Climate Week NYC, scheduled for 22-28 September 2014, in support of the UN Secretary-General's Climate Summit. The documentary, featuring nine initiatives from around the world, aims to demonstrate how climate action is generating jobs and improving lives.

The World Bank also reported on the implementation of projects in Viet Nam, Zimbabwe and India.

Event: CGIAR Development Dialogues [viewed]

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is holding its inaugural 'Development Dialogues' to discuss forestry, agriculture, livestock, fisheries, landscapes and food systems in the context of climate change and sustainable development. The event will explore integrated landscape approaches for agriculture, forestry and other land uses in support of efforts to develop sustainable food systems in the midst of climate change, population growth, increasing poverty and the feminization of agriculture. Panelists will include: Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, Minister for Environment of Peru and President of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 20), and Kwesi Atta-Krah, Director of CGIAR's Research Program on Integrated Systems for the Humid Tropics. Panel discussions will aim to move beyond the “land sparing” versus “land sharing” debates by exploring the geographic, ecological, social and political contexts that influence land use policy. The Development Dialogues will take place during Climate Week NYC alongside the UN General Assembly and the UN Climate Summit. Participants will engage in debates on the following themes: prosperous, food-secure and resilient livelihoods; healthier, innovative, capable and inclusive communities; new partnerships for development impact; and climate change-resilient agro-ecosystems.
