Event: 10th Meeting of the IRENA Council [viewed]

The 10th Meeting of the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is expected to consider the draft work programme, draft budget and reports on progress in implementing the current Work Programme and Budget. IRENA's Council convenes twice per year, is accountable to the Assembly and is composed of 21 IRENA members who are elected on a rotating basis every two years. Council meetings normally last for two days and feature strategic discussions on the way forward of the Agency and future activities.

Religious Leaders Urge Ambitious Climate Agreement [viewed]

faith-leaders-declaration20 October 2015: UNFCCC Executive Director Christiana Figueres received a statement from a delegation of 154 faith and spiritual leaders representing different faith groups, headed by South African Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, calling for an ambitious climate agreement, reminding governments to commit to emission cuts and climate risk reduction, and pledging contributions from their own faith communities, including fossil fuel divestment.

Adaptation Committee Reports on Progress Ahead of SBI, SBSTA [viewed]

UNFCCC20 October 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published the report of the Adaptation Committee (FCCC/SB/2015/2) on its work from November 2014-October 2015, in preparation for the 43rd sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). The report highlights progress made toward: promoting coherence in adaptation under the Convention and synergies with organizations, centers and networks; providing technical support and guidance to Parties on adaptation actions and means of implementation; and outreach, awareness raising and information sharing.

World Wide Views Alliance Reports on Citizen Consultations [viewed]

world_wide-views20 October 2015: The World Wide Views (WWViews) Alliance has launched the findings of a global citizen consultation on climate change and energy, which sought to determine “how far citizens around the world are willing to go” in the areas of climate action and energy transitions. The consultation, taking place on 6 June 2015, involved approximately 10,000 people in 76 countries.

Governments Air Priorities for 2030 Agenda, Sustainable Development [viewed]

unga7020 October 2015: The UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee (Economic and Financial) held its discussion of sustainable development (agenda item 20) and several sub-items, including on climate change, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and small island developing States (SIDS). UN Assistant Secretary-General, Lenni Montiel, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), who introduced several reports of the UN Secretary-General, said sustainable development is not confined to one item on the Committee's agenda; instead, the Committee should consider all issues before it through the lens of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

IRENA Guide Supports Transition to ‘Age of Renewable Power' [viewed]

IRENA8 October 2015: A report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) proposes a framework for the development of national roadmaps for power sector transformations. It identifies 20 measures to integrate variable renewable energy sources into electricity grids and presents lessons from countries already pursuing a power system transformation to renewable energy.

Francophone Countries Discuss Linkages Among Land, Climate and SDGs [viewed]

francophone_unccd19 October 2015: The Institut de la Francophonie pour le Développement Durable (IFDD), a subsidiary body of the International Organization of the Francophonie (IOF), under the chairmanship of Senegal and in cooperation with the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Secretariat, organized a discussion on the topic of how to use the fight against climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as leverage for soil preservation. The event took place on the sidelines of the 12th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the UNCCD.

OECD, IEA Encourage Increased Climate Action by Non-State Actors [viewed]

oecd.iea15 October 2015: Cognizant that ambitious climate action will require efforts by a range of actors, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have published a report focusing on three types of non-State stakeholders, namely sub-national governments, the private sector and financial institutions, and their involvement in climate action. The report, titled 'Encouraging Increased Climate Action by Non-Party Stakeholders,' examines how the 2015 climate agreement, expected to be adopted in Paris in December 2015, could encourage increased mitigation actions by non-party stakeholders and the financing of such actions.
