UNEP DTU Addresses Uncertainty in GHG Emission Projections [viewed]

unep-dtu11 January 2016: Quantifying uncertainty in national level projections of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can foster more robust climate change mitigation plans, according to a report released by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) DTU Partnership. The report, titled 'Uncertainty in Greenhouse Gas Emission Scenario Projections,' presents approaches to calculating this uncertainty and explains the rationale for doing so.

FAO Provides Guidance on Sustainable Intensification of Cereal Production [viewed]

fao_headquartersJanuary 2016: A guide published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provides an overview of the FAO's model of ecosystem-based agriculture, called 'Save and Grow,' and presents case studies of its application around the world. The model is used to increase cereal yields while rendering production systems more sustainable and resilient to the impacts of climate change.

Pakistan Panel on Climate Change Established [viewed]

ppcc13 January 2016: A stakeholders' consultative workshop held at the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) in Islamabad, Pakistan, has established the Pakistan Panel on Climate Change (PPCC) – a think tank aimed to provide science-based technical support to the public and private sectors and civil society in Pakistan and South Asia on matters related to climate change policy.

Event: Technical Analysis of Biennial Update Reports under the UNFCCC [viewed]

This technical analysis of the international consultation and analysis (ICA) of developing country parties' Biennial Update Reports (BURs) is conducted by a team of technical experts, which is selected from the UNFCCC roster of experts. The team of technical experts will produce a summary report with input from the country, and through consultations with the country concerned, within three months of the analysis.

Event: Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2016 [viewed]

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is an Abu Dhabi government initiative to address the interconnected challenges affecting energy, water and sustainable development. The largest sustainability gathering in the Middle East, ADSW encourages outcomes that pave the way toward sustainability, and provides the opportunity for dialogue and cooperation through policy dialogues, conferences, exhibitions and other events. ADSW 2016 is comprised of: an opening ceremony; the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), including a solar expo and sustainable transport zone; the International Water Summit; the EcoWaste exhibition; and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly. It also will also include the following events: Women in Sustainability, Environment and Renewable Energy; IRENA Financial Times Debate; Egypt Energy Forum; Abu Dhabi Global Action Day; and the Zayed Future Energy Prize, the United Arab Emirate's international awards for energy and sustainability pioneers.

Speakers during the opening event include: Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto; UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; and nine heads of states, including those from the Seychelles, Palau, Kosovo, Serbia, Nigeria and Morocco.

ADSW is being hosted by Masdar, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company, and is expected to attract more than 33,000, with over 80 heads and ministers of state, and other participants from more than 170 countries.

Event: High-Level Ministerial Meeting on the Implementation Sendai Framework 2015-2030 (Americas) [viewed]

This meeting will discuss the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030 and define regional priorities for its implementation in the Americas. Recommendations emanating from the meeting will provide the basis for further discussion and analysis with a broader range of stakeholders in the framework of the Regional Platform for DRR 2016. The meeting is being organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction – Regional Office for the Americas (UNISDR AM).

Event: Africa Regional Workshop on Use of the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National GHG Inventories [viewed]

This Africa Regional Workshop on using the 2006 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories will take place in Maseru, Lesotho. The Guidelines provide methodologies for estimating national inventories of anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks; were prepared in response to an invitation by the Parties to the UNFCCC; and may help Parties fulfill their commitments under the UNFCCC on reporting on inventories of anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases (GHG) not controlled by the Montreal Protocol.

Event: 9th Meeting of the Adaptation Committee [viewed]

The Adaptation Committee was established to promote the implementation of enhanced action on adaptation in a coherent manner under the UNFCCC through: providing technical support and guidance to Parties; sharing relevant information, knowledge, experience and good practices; promoting synergy and strengthening engagement with national, regional and international organizations, centers and networks; providing information and recommendations for consideration by the COP when providing guidance on means to incentivize the implementation of adaptation actions; and considering information communicated by Parties on monitoring and review of adaptation actions, support provided and received.
