World Meteorological Day 2015 Highlights Climate Knowledge for Climate Action [viewed]

‘Smart Tree-Invest' Promotes Climate-Smart, Tree-Based Agriculture in Viet Nam [viewed]

ifad_cgiar22 March 2015: Local government agencies in Viet Nam have expressed support for the 'Climate-Smart, Tree-Based, Co-Investment in Adaptation and Mitigation in Asia' (Smart Tree-Invest) project, co-funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the CGIAR Consortium Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry, during a visit from the regional project team from Bogor, Indonesia, that took place from 11-14 March 2014.

WCDRR Adopts Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction [viewed]

wcdrr_meeting19 March 2015: Representatives from 187 countries have adopted the ‘Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030,' making it the first major agreement of the post-2015 development agenda. The Framework, which was adopted following a marathon round of negotiations at the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) held in Sendai, Japan, includes seven targets and four priorities for action.

The theme of the celebration, 'Create a Climate Smart Future,' focused on the intersection of forests with resilience, adaptation, mitigation and the global climate and development discussions.

Event: Désertif'actions 2015: 'Climate Change and the Preservation of Drylands - Time to Act!' [viewed]

This international civil society forum is organized by Centre d'Action et de Réalisations Internationales (CARI) under the motto ‘Climate change and the preservation of drylands: time to act!'. The event is expected to bring together stakeholders from more than 100 countries to share their concerns and build common positions on desertification and land degradation under a changing climate and its consequences. The conference will address the three themes of: desertification and land degradation; development sustainability in drylands – creating greater synergy between the three Rio Conventions; and a pluralistic and organized civil society – 'having a true impact and doing what needs to be done'. Désertif'actions 2015 will be preceded by preparatory meetings at the national level, and a multilingual online forum in April and May 2015. It will close with a day of cultural and scientific events in Montpellier, France, to raise public awareness on these issues.

GFIA Focuses on Sustainable and Climate-Smart Agriculture [viewed]

gfia11 March 2015: To help meet the goal of increasing agricultural production while minimizing environmental damage, the 2nd Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture (GFIA) met to showcase sustainable agriculture innovations and solutions. The forum featured, inter alia: a Global Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) Summit; a solutions conference on ‘Food Losses and Waste Initiative: From Prevention to Valorisation'; a two-day conference on ICT for Sustainable Agriculture; a session on ‘Edible Cities: Building Resilience with Urban Agriculture'; and an Innovations Programme, with sessions on agribusiness, water, mechanization, renewable energy and agroforestry.

CGIAR Members, Partners Establish Climate Research Centers in Africa [viewed]

logos_cifor_itta11 March 2015: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and Germany's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have announced the establishment of the Congo Basin's first center for excellence in climate change research. A greenhouse gas (GHG) laboratory was established in Yaoundé, Cameroon, in 2014 and represents the beginning of the partners' effort to develop a network of expertise and facilities to strengthen climate change research across Africa.

Climate Knowledge Brokers Annual Workshop Report Released [viewed]

Event: Climate and Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academy 2015 [viewed]

Taking place for the sixth time, the 2015 Climate and Sustainable Energy Finance (CSEF) Summer Academy is organized by the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management within the framework of the Frankfurt School (FS) - UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance. The 2015 Summer Academy will seek to provide participants with extensive knowledge on public and private sector climate finance on theoretical classroom learning, enhanced by practical sessions in financial modeling and case studies. The CSEF Summer Academy is part of UNEP-FS Centre's Development Finance Summer Academy series and will also include a panel discussion, two social programmes and a field trip.

FAO Reports Address Disaster Risk Management in Fisheries and Aquaculture [viewed]
