Shortlist for 2014 European Green Capital Award Released [viewed]

12 April 2012: The European Commission has announced that out of 18 applicants for the 2014 European Green Capital award, Bristol, Copenhagen and Frankfurt have been named as finalists. The award is presented annually to a city that represents “the vanguard of environmentally friendly urban living,” with cities being judged, inter alia, on: climate change contributions; transport; sustainable land use; nature and biodiversity; air quality; water production and management; water consumption and treatment; sustainable employment; and energy performance.

Event: Seventh ITU Symposium on ICTs, the Environment and Climate Change [viewed]

This symposium, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Government of Canada, aims to raise awareness of the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in climate change mitigation and adaptation, thereby advancing the “green ICT” agenda. Among other things, it will provide an avenue to explore how advanced technologies can improve the environmental sustainability of the ICT sector itself. The symposium is part of ITU's activities in the lead up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), highlighting the importance of ICTs as enablers of environmentally-sustainable economic development.

UNEP, UNDP Workshop Calls for Enhanced Support for Climate Change Adaptation in Africa [viewed]

10 April 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) held a workshop on "Sharing Lessons in Africa on Climate Change Adaptation." Participants shared knowledge and exchanged ideas on common climate change risks, built on lessons learned from projects across Africa, formulated common solutions in support of national policy processes and identified best practices for delivering adaptation solutions.
