UNISDR R!SE Initiative to Mainstream DRM in Business [viewed]

rise19 May 2014: The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) launched the R!SE Initiative, which: has the objective of mainstreaming disaster risk management (DRM) into corporate planning and investment decision making; brings together business, investment and insurance representatives, as well as actors from the public sector, business education and civil society; and aims to develop and promote global standards on risk metrics and voluntary industry standards for disaster risk-sensitive investment.

UN-REDD Announces Partnership for Community-based REDD+ [viewed]

Smallgrants15 May 2014: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (UN-REDD) launched a partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) small grants programme (SGP) in support of community based REDD+. The objective of the partnership is to enable indigenous peoples and local communities to effectively participate in the design, implementation and assessment of REDD+ projects and programmes.

Asian Cities Emphasize Climate Focus in Capital Investment Planning [viewed]

World Bank15 May 2014: Representatives of Asian cities met at the second Seoul Creditworthiness Academy workshop to discuss ways to improve municipal finances and access to capital to achieve low-carbon development, and the need for a “climate lens” in developing capital investment plans. Participants included 39 mayors, city officials and technical experts representing 15 cities and provinces from 12 countries across Asia.

Event: Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF) [viewed]

The Latin American and Caribbean Carbon Forum (LACCF) will take place from 3-5 September 2014, in Bogotá, Colombia. The Forum will: inform attendees of developments in carbon markets; provide a venue for connecting carbon project developers and investors; showcase lessons from completed Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in Latin America and the Caribbean; feature presentations on public and private sector strategies for promoting CDM benefits in the region; offer the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), Low Carbon Development Strategies (LEDS), market mechanisms, and green investment in the region; and encourage networking and discussions among technical experts, project developers and carbon buyers. The Forum is organized by the UNFCCC Secretariat, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UNEP Riso Centre, the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Event: Nansen Initiative Consultation: Regional Dynamics of Human Mobility in West Africa [viewed]

This Nansen Initiative Consultation on Disasters, Climate Change and Displacement, titled 'Regional Dynamics of Human Mobility in West Africa,' will discuss the regional dynamics of human mobility related to those disasters linked to natural hazards and climate change impacts in West Africa, particularly key challenges faced regarding migration, displacement and planned relocation. The event will also address the potential for cooperative measures to help protect displaced populations and migrants, and inform regional policymakers in West Africa and other interested stakeholders about the Nansen Initiative, which is led by the Governments of Switzerland and Norway. Participants will discuss topics related to: protection needs and challenges for displaced persons and migrants in the context of disasters and climate change in West Africa; specific challenges for those displaced across international borders; challenges linked to those migrants who need to adapt to urban environments; the role of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as a platform for regional cooperation; and the position of West African countries in the UNFCCC negotiations. The Nansen Initiative is a State-led consultative process intended to build consensus on developing an agenda that addresses the needs of people displaced across international borders by natural disasters, including those linked to the impacts of climate change.

African Countries Adopt Common Position on Post-2015 DRR Framework [viewed]

The meeting was one in a series of multi-stakeholder consultations leading up to the 3rd World Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR), which is scheduled to take place in Japan in March 2015.

Fifth Clean Energy Ministerial Addresses Finance, Markets and Energy-Water Nexus [viewed]

cem513 May 2014: Energy ministers and high-level delegates from 23 countries, as well as representatives from the private sector and international organizations, gathered for the Fifth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM5) to discuss accelerating the transition toward a global clean energy economy and to assess progress made since CEM1 in 2010. Around 250 participants attended the meeting, which convened a set of public-private roundtables and a Ministerial segment on clean energy, integration, energy efficiency and human capacity.

UNESCO-IOC and KIOST Collaborate to Monitor Ocean Carbon [viewed]

unesco-kiost13 May 2014: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC) and the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) signed an agreement to strengthen their collaboration on ocean carbon monitoring and research activities through the continuation of the Ocean Carbon Sources and Sinks project.
