December 2015-February 2016 NAMA Update [viewed]

nama_update14 February 2016: This update provides information about individual nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) by developing countries, and related support, publications and events for the period from December 2015 to mid-February 2016. During this period, NAMAs registered as seeking support included ones on rural electrification in the Gambia and efficient use of biomass in Georgia. NAMAs in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR), Vanuatu, Peru, Colombia, Kenya and China received support. Several reports, guides and other publications on NAMAs were also launched during this period.

Working Group Makes Progress on Disaster Risk Reduction Indicators [viewed]

UNISDR11 February 2016: Government representatives and disaster risk reduction (DRR) practitioners met to continue work on developing a set of indicators to measure progress in implementing the Sendai Framework for DRR to ensure its goals are being met up to 2030. To assess progress in meeting the goals, countries working to come up with a common understanding of what they are measuring regarding both the scale of the problems faced and the impact of DRR efforts.

PARCC Project Links Climate Assessments and Biodiversity Protection in West Africa [viewed]

unepwcmc_parcc_iucn_gef9 February 2016: An end-of-project workshop for partners of the Protected Areas Resilient to Climate Change (PARCC) explored how to use the results of new regional climate projections and in-depth vulnerability assessments to improve the management of protected areas in West Africa. The meeting took place in Banjul, The Gambia, from 24-29 January 2016.

Event: First International Agrobiodiversity Congress 2016 [viewed]

Organized by the Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources and Bioversity International, a member of the CGIAR Consortium, this event will provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss issues and ideas around the sustainable management of agricultural biodiversity. It will bring together experts in agricultural biodiversity and genetic resources, biotechnology, nutrition, ecology and environmental science, agronomy, forestry, law and policy analysis, economics and other related fields of science and the social sciences. Abstracts can be submitted until 1 April 2016 under the following themes: agrobiodiversity for food, nutrition and ecosystem services; agrobiodiversity for adaptation and mitigation of climate change; intellectual property rights (IPRs), access and benefit-sharing (ABS) and farmers' rights; quarantine, biosafety and biosecurity issues; conservation strategies and methodologies; science-led innovation for agrobiodiversity management and sustainable use; and capacity building and strengthening partnerships.

ICAO Environment Committee Recommends CO2 Standard for Adoption [viewed]

Icao8 February 2016: The Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has agreed unanimously to recommend the first international aviation carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions standard for adoption. The standard will apply to new aircraft type designs as of 2020 and new deliveries of current in-production aircraft types from 2023.

REFMAR Days Advance International Cooperation on Sea-Level Observation [viewed]

refmar4 February 2016: With a view to supporting sea-level observation for prediction of tides, implementation of tsunami warning systems, coastal management, decision making and other applications, nearly 150 scientists and researchers from Francophone countries gathered for the second edition of the REFMAR Days. The event focused on: sea-level observation in support of research; storm surges and extreme sea-level events; and understanding long-term changes in sea-level, with a full day dedicated to each theme.

Loss and Damage Committee Discusses Implementation Issues, Displacement and Risk Transfer [viewed]

UNFCCC5 February 2016: The second meeting of the Executive Committee (ExCom) of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage (WIM) addressed, among other issues, the implementation of its initial two-year workplan, and initiated work mandated by the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC concerning the establishment of: a task force on displacement; and a clearinghouse on insurance and risk transfer.

Event: 42nd Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum [viewed]

The 42nd Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum (GHACOF 42), themed '2015 El Niño impacts and lessons learned in the Greater Horn of Africa,' will take place from 22-23 February 2016, in Kigali, Rwanda. GHACOF 42 will bring together a wide range of stakeholders, including climate scientists, researchers, applications experts from critical socioeconomic sectors, governmental and non-governmental organizations, decision makers and civil society representatives. Workshops will be held on agriculture and food security, water resources, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and health, among others. During the Forum, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) will officially launch a live web-map to monitor climate and associated hazards in the Greater Horn of Africa region to improve accessibility to climate and hazard data. The Forum will be preceded by a capacity-building workshop for regional climate experts to be held at ICPAC, from 15-20 February 2016.

Event: International Day of Forests 2016 [viewed]

The International Day of Forests is held annually on 21 March to raise awareness of the importance of forests to people. This year the Day will convene under the theme, 'Forests and Water: Sustain Life and Livelihoods' and will be a joint celebration of the International Day of Forests and World Water Day.
