Global Forum on Emergency Telecommunications Launches DRR Initiatives [viewed]

ITU logo28 January 2016: Information and communication technology (ICT) experts are working to harness the power of telecommunications to both prevent and mitigate the impacts of natural disasters. Gathered for the second 'Global Forum on Emergency Telecommunications (GET-2016): Saving Lives,' an international event focusing on the intersection of emergency telecommunications and climate change mitigation and adaptation, 500 participants from 90 countries adopted two global ICT initiatives aimed at enhancing disaster risk reduction (DRR).

State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources Report Urges Action to Conserve Livestock Diversity for Resilient Agriculture [viewed]

fao_headquarters27 January 2016: 'The Second Report on the State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture' (SoW-AnGR), published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), underlines the key importance of livestock diversity for adapting production systems to the impacts of climate change and meeting global challenges such as increasing demand for animal protein. The report finds that global livestock diversity remains at risk, and calls for stronger efforts to conserve the existing pool of animal genetic resources.

Event: 2016 Investor Summit on Climate Risk: Advancing the Clean Trillion [viewed]

The 2016 Investor Summit on Climate Risk is the first major event on climate change for investors and businesses to discuss the implications of the Paris Agreement. The Summit will explore the investment opportunities provided by the climate deal reached in Paris, with a focus on: the types of capital flows necessary to achieve the deal's goals; opportunities to expand clean energy investment in developed and developing countries; and solutions to mitigating carbon asset risks, including portfolio decarbonization and support for economic development that is less dependent on fossil fuels. The Summit aims to sustain the momentum from Paris and catalyze further actions that investors, businesses and governments can take toward a low-carbon future.

Speakers include: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; Former Vice President Al Gore; Michael Bloomberg, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change; UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres; Bank of America Chairman and CEO Brian Moynihan; and French Environment Minister Ségolène Royal. Ceres, the UN Foundation, and the UN Office for Partnerships are co-hosting the Summit.

UNEP, GEF Support Air Monitoring in Bosnia Herzegovina [viewed]

GEF UNEP19 January 2016: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has opened two air monitoring stations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and refurbished two existing ones. These steps will assist the country in: monitoring climate and air quality in line with national and EU law and prevent illnesses and deaths from outdoor pollution; ensuring accurate data is available to monitor climate change; alerting the public about pollution risk; and measuring the impact of policy measures to improve air quality.

Event: Agriculture and Food Systems, Climate Change and Nutrition in CIS Countries [viewed]

This conference will explore the linkages among climate change, agriculture, food systems, social safety nets and nutrition. It will bring together stakeholders from the research, government and donor communities to: exchange and review knowledge; discuss ongoing research efforts; and identify gaps for improvement and future research in the region. The event will help raise awareness about the importance of nutrition and make development in the region more nutrition sensitive. The conference will address: findings from the Global Nutrition Report (2015) focusing on agriculture and food systems, climate change, nutrition-specific interventions and social safety nets in Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries; nutrition-specific programmes and social protection policies in the region; and evidence-based research on the impacts of climate change on nutrition and vice-versa, as well as agriculture-nutrition linkages. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the Eurasian Center for Food Security and the World Bank are organizing this conference, which will take place at Lomonosov Moscow State University.
