Event: Global Aviation Partnerships on Emissions Reductions (E-GAP) - Multiplying Environmental Action [viewed]

This forum is being organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to highlight the results achieved thus far through partnerships between ICAO, governments and other organizations that are focused on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international aviation. These include in particular, progress made through the ICAO State Action Plans capacity building and assistance strategy. The seminar will cover current and potential action in the following areas: aircraft technology and research programmes; recycling of aircraft; next generation air navigation and green operations; sustainable alternative fuels and renewable energy; financing for aviation environmental activities; and carbon markets. Initiatives formed as a result of the seminar will be presented to the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC at its 21st session in December 2015.

Event: UNESCO Expert Meeting on Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development in the Arab States [viewed]

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is hosting this meeting to explore the challenges that climate change is posing and will pose to education systems in the Arab region. Given the weather extremes that affect Arab countries, especially with the onset of climate change, UNESCO envisions a robust role for education in adaptation and mitigation. Recommendations formulated at the meeting will inform UNESCO's work in the region under its Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development.

CPF Publishes Highlights from 2013-2014 [viewed]

CPF5 May 2015: In celebration of it 15th anniversary, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) released a review of its activities in 2013 and 2014. In the document, CPF underlines its continually growing commitment to sustainable forest management (SFM) and shows how it has set the stage over the past two years for negotiating the future International Arrangement on Forests (IAF), as well as the forest-related aspects of the expected climate change agreement and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015.

UNEP Launches District Energy in Cities Initiative in Europe, Central Asia [viewed]

UNEP Logo30 April 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) launched its District Energy in Cities initiative in the European and Central Asian region during a workshop co-hosted with the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC). At the workshop, several countries and cities committed to meeting climate change targets through modern district energy systems.

UNFCCC Summarizes Cooperative Activities [viewed]

UNFCCC30 April 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a document that summarizes key cooperative activities it has carried out with other international organizations since April 2014. The document summarizes key activities in the areas of: technology; finance; capacity building; adaptation; mitigation; climate knowledge, comprised of science, research and systematic observation; gender; cooperation with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Secretariats through the Joint Liaison Group of the Rio Conventions; the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda; contribution of the private sector through the UN Global Compact; and communications.

FAO, Norway to Provide Forest Countries with Monitoring Software [viewed]

fao_norad13 April 2015: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Government of Norway are partnering to aid developing countries in their monitoring and reporting of changes to forest resources. The US$4.5 million partnership agreement will allow these countries to access Earth observation data, such as from satellite imagery, and create an easy-to-use platform for collating and analyzing the data.

In addition, the Global Water Partnership (GWP) undertook an initiative for climate-proofing water investment in the Caribbean.

Moldova, Ukraine Launch Adaptation Framework for the Dniester Basin [viewed]

UNECE23 April 2015: The Governments of Moldova and Ukraine have launched the Strategic Framework for Adaptation to Climate Change for the Dniester Basin, which will help the two countries mitigate climate change impacts, enhance transboundary cooperation and facilitate sustainable development. Having endorsed the Strategic Framework, the countries will develop an Implementation Plan, supported by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

First Global Adaptation Network Forum Disseminates Adaptation Knowledge [viewed]

global_adaptation_network7 March 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the UNFCCC Secretariat and with support from the Governments of Japan, Spain and Norway, held the first Global Adaptation Network (GAN) Forum. Participants shared their experiences in exchanging adaptation knowledge, challenges in coordinating and facilitating knowledge dissemination, and means to improve availability and accessibility of such knowledge to users.
