UNEP, IDB Cooperate to Support SDGs and Paris Agreement [viewed]

unep_idb20 January 2016: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) have announced that they will cooperate on environmental conservation in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. The IDB is set to increase its financial support to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to more than US$150 billion over the coming years.

FAO Reviews Risks and Responses to Climate Impacts on Food Security [viewed]

fao_headquarters15 January 2016: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has released a paper reviewing the latest evidence on the impacts of climate change for food security and nutrition and options for response actions that enhance resilience of agricultural systems. The paper, titled 'Climate Change and Food Security: Risks and Responses,' concludes that reducing vulnerabilities should be a priority as poor vulnerable populations feel the worst impacts of climate change.

Event: World Economic Forum Annual Meeting [viewed]

The World Economic Forum's (WEF) Annual Meeting will take place under the theme, ‘Mastering the Fourth Industrial Revolution,' with the aim of building a shared understanding of current changes and shaping a collective future that places humans at the center. The "Fourth Industrial Revolution" refers to the creation of new capabilities and impacts on economic, political and social systems as a result of a fusion of technologies across the biological, digital and physical worlds. The WEF will discuss climate change, environment and resource scarcity, food security and agriculture, inclusive, sustainable growth and security, employment, skills and human capital, gender parity, and the future of the global financial system, among other current challenges. The Annual Meeting will bring together over 40 heads of state and government with 2,500 leaders from UN agencies, business and civil society.

UNEP Releases Guide on Environmental Assessment Frameworks [viewed]

UNEPDecember 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a guide for policy makers for selecting and implementing appropriate environmental assessment frameworks. The brochure, titled 'An Introduction to Environmental Assessment,' gives an overview of available frameworks, including those most commonly used by UNEP, provides guidance on selecting appropriate frameworks, introduces common terms and concepts and provides illustrative examples.

Global Soil Partnership (GSP)15 December 2015: The Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) has released a briefing paper on the role of soil organic carbon (SOC) in offsetting climate change. The paper reviews recent research on SOC and concludes that actions to reverse the loss of soil organic matter could be one of the most effective tools to mitigate climate change.

Governments, Partners Launch International Partnership for Blue Carbon [viewed]

australia_indonesia_costarica6 December 2015: The Governments of Australia, Costa Rica and Indonesia launched an International Partnership for Blue Carbon at the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), which convened on the sidelines of the Paris Climate Change Conference.
