EU Council Calls for Coherent Response to Arctic Region Challenges [viewed]

european_council20 June 2016: Recognizing that global activities have contributed to the "significant risks posed by climate change and environmental impacts" to the Arctic, the EU Council has issued conclusions emphasizing the need for implementation of commitments under environmental agreements, especially the Paris Agreement on climate change. The conclusions were adopted at a meeting of the EU's Foreign Affairs Council held on 20 June, where foreign ministers discussed an integrated EU policy for the Arctic, including a joint communication on the matter adopted on 27 April by the European Commission and the High Representative.

Bioversity International Coordinates Efforts to Save Pacific Coconut Diversity [viewed]

Bioversity International13 June 2016: Bioversity International, a member of the CGIAR Consortium, through its International Coconut Genetic Resources Network (COGENT), has launched a project aiming to protect Pacific coconut diversity and associated livelihoods from the threat of genetic erosion through climate change and plant disease by establishing a new gene bank and germplasm collection in Papua New Guinea.

Event: International Coral Reef Initiative General Assembly [viewed]

This meeting of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) will address the degradation of coral reefs and related ecosystems around the world, including discussion of the status of coral reefs; the impacts of climate change on coral reefs; coral bleaching; and initiatives in the Indian Ocean region. The event marks the first meeting since France and Madagascar replaced Japan and Thailand as co-chairs of the ICRI Secretariat, on 1 June 2016. The event is expected to bring together governments, international organizations, scientific bodies and civil society.

Event: 35th Meetings of the CCAMLR Commission and Scientific Committee [viewed]

The 35th Meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) Scientific Committee will convene concurrently with the 35th Meeting of the CCAMLR Commission to discuss the conservation of Antarctic marine life. The Scientific Committee will convene from 17-21 October. The Commission meeting will take place from 17-28 October. The Scientific Committee and its subsidiary groups are the main avenue for scientific advice in CCAMLR, with the Convention requiring the Commission to take full account of the Scientific Committee's recommendations and advice. The Commission serves as CCAMLR's main decision-making body. Mark Belcher, United Kingdom, will serve as the Chair of the Scientific Committee Meeting and Dmitry Gonchar, the Russian Federation, will chair the Commission Meeting.

Capacity Building and Technology Update: SB 44 Outcomes Focus on Implementation of Paris Agreement, GEF Establishes CBIT Trust Fund [viewed]

UNFCCC - GEF - UNITAR18 June 2016: The 44th sessions of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 44) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 44) and the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1) were held in Bonn, Germany, from 16-26 May 2016. The sessions presented the first opportunity for Parties to consider Paris mandates on capacity building and technology development and transfer, including the terms of reference (ToR) for the Paris Committee on Capacity-building, the Paris Agreement's technology framework, and the scope and modalities for the periodic assessment of the Technology Mechanism in the context of how it serves the Paris Agreement.

GEF Council Marks 25th Anniversary, Approves Work Program for US$398.68 Million, CBIT Trust Fund [viewed]

gef509 June 2016: The 50th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, which marked the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the GEF, approved a Work Program comprising 38 project concepts and four programmatic frameworks, with total resources amounting to US$398.68 million. In addition, the GEF Council established a new trust fund for the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT), which was created in response to a request by the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties, as reflected in the decision adopting the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Event: 49th Session of the IOC Executive Council [viewed]

The 49th Session of UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission's (UNESCO-IOC) Executive Council will review the Commission's work plans within the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and the SAMOA Pathway. The Council meets once per biennium.

World Oceans Day Raises Awareness on Plastic Pollution, SDG 14 [viewed]

World Oceans Day8 June 2016: The world celebrated World Oceans Day under the theme, ‘Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet.' Events around the world aimed to promote the prevention of plastic pollution in the world's oceans, and highlighted the role of healthy oceans in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 calls to "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development."
