Structured Expert Dialogue on 2013-2015 Review Completes its Work [viewed]

UNFCCC9 February 2015: The 2nd meeting of the fourth session of the structured expert dialogue (SED 4-2) took place in conjunction with the eighth part of the second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action. At its final meeting, the SED completed its work by addressing, in a balanced manner, all remaining inputs to the 2013–2015 review, focusing on information sources other than those of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

World Wetlands Day Celebrates "Wetlands For Our Future" [viewed]

Ramsar2 February 2015: The annual World Wetlands Day was celebrated on 2 February 2015, marking the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, and helping to raise public awareness of the value and importance of wetlands. Held under the theme ‘Wetlands for our future,' it sought to highlight the many ways in which we can all contribute to their conservation and restoration.

Bioversity Showcases Crop Diversification Practices in Southeast Asia [viewed]

CGIARJanuary 2015: A report published by Bioversity International focuses on how Cambodia, Lao PDR and Viet Nam are using crop diversification to bolster resilience to climate change. The publication, titled 'Effective Implementation of Crop Diversification Strategies for Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam: Insights from Past Experiences and Ideas for New Research,' aims to fill gaps in current research and inform pilot initiatives to be tested at the sub-national level and possibly scaled up as national programmes.

Event: Workshop on Harnessing Climate Change Financing for Sustainable Forest Management in Southeast Asia [viewed]

Convened under the UN Forum on Forests Facilitative Process to support financing for sustainable forest management (SFM), the 'Workshop on Harnessing Climate Change Financing for Sustainable Forest Management in Southeast Asia' will consider links and opportunities for harmonization between SFM financing and REDD+. The workshop will be co-convened with the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

Event: Webinar on Increasing Awareness of Soil Biodiversity and Carbon [viewed]

This webinar, titled “Learning from wetlands – the case for dry soils,” is being convened by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the Ramsar Convention Secretariat and Wetlands International. It aims to build knowledge and expand the understanding of policy and scientific issues related to reducing emissions from soil carbon based on lessons learned from peatlands and other wetlands. The webinar will address topics, such as: building scientific knowledge on soil carbon; establishing policy and regulatory frameworks; and implementing projects and programmes for reducing emissions. The webinar is targeted towards Focal Points, national biodiversity managers, sustainable land management (SLM) experts and other technical specialists in Africa. Outcomes include the identification of priority actions to enhance the consideration of soil biodiversity and carbon for implementing the CBD. Those who are interested should register before 6 February 2015.

Event: World Environment Day 2015 [viewed]

The 2015 World Environment Day (WED) global celebrations will convene under the theme resource efficiency and sustainable consumption and production (SCP) within the context of the planet's regenerative capacity. The slogan, ‘Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care,” was chosen through voting on social media.

Italy will serve as the host of WED 2015 and the global WED celebrations will be organized at the Milan Expo. Celebrations at the Milan Expo will complement the Expo's theme, ‘Feeding the Planet—Energy for Life,' which will showcase ideas, solutions and technology to help ensure healthy, safe and sufficient food for all while respecting the planet and its carrying capacity.

The WED 2015 programme at the Milan Expo will also involve activities with partners such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), Slow Food, WWF Italy and the Green Film Network.

WED is celebrated annually on 5 June as a day for positive environmental action.
