AMCEN Declaration Urges Action on Climate Change, Illegal Wildlife Trade, Green Economy [viewed]

African Ministerial Conference on Environment (AMCEN)6 March 2015: African ministers called for adaptation-mitigation parity in the 2015 climate agreement at the 15th session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN). Ministers also supported measures to develop a common wildlife strategy, enhance natural resources management, ensure an inclusive green economy and support the continent's poverty eradication and sustainable development efforts.

EU Submits INDC, Reports on State of Europe's Environment [viewed]

ec6 March 2015: The EU has submitted its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC) to the UNFCCC Secretariat, the second party to do so after Switzerland. The contribution, approved by the Environment Council, indicates that the EU intends to achieve at least a 40% domestic reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions below 1990 levels by 2030, in line with the EU 2030 Climate and Energy Framework, which was agreed by the European Council in October 2014.

Event: World Oceans Day 2015 [viewed]

World Oceans Day has been celebrated annually, on 8 June, since the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 63/111 in December 2008. The Day seeks to: remind everyone of the major part the Ocean has in everyday life; inform the public on the impact of the human actions on the Ocean; develop a worldwide movement of citizen, towards the Ocean; and mobilize and unite the world's population on a project for the sustainable management of the World Ocean.

AMCEN Session Launches Reports on Biodiversity, Climate Change, Mountains, South-South Cooperation [viewed]

SOER 2015 Highlights Challenges in Achieving European Environment Goals [viewed]

EEA2 March 2015: “The level of ambition of existing environmental policy may be inadequate to achieve Europe's long-term environmental goals,” according to ‘The European environment - state and outlook 2015 - synthesis report' (SOER 2015). The report finds that the region faces substantial challenges in protecting its natural capital, stimulating resource-efficient, low carbon economic and social development, and safeguarding its population from environmental health risks. The European Environment Agency (EEA) produces the SOER every five years.

UNESCO Conference Focuses on Interaction between Biodiversity and Climate Change [viewed]

UNESCO10 February 2015: Participants explored the scientific community's approaches to climate change, including its links to biodiversity, at a conference on the theme ‘Assises du Vivant 2015 - Biodiversity and Climate Change in Interaction: Creating new life possibilities.' The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) organized the conference as part of preparations for the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC.

UNEP Seeks Comments on Access-to-Information Policy [viewed]

UNEP25 February 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is requesting comments on its Access-to-Information-Policy, which contains the principles and procedures governing access to information at UNEP. The policy was issued on 6 June 2014, and is currently in a pilot phase. According to UNEP, it seeks to make accessible the information concerning UNEP's work and the information it generates, in a manner consistent with the relevant policies and practices of the UN Secretariat.

International Forum Urges Adoption of Climate-Smart Agriculture, Agro-Ecology [viewed]

logo_french_agricultural20 February 2015: Speaking at the International Forum on Agriculture and Climate Change, which was organized by the Government of France as the first in a series of events leading up to the December 2015 climate change conference, José Graziano da Silva, Director-General of Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), urged a “paradigm shift” in agriculture. He described today's predominant model of agricultural production as “not suitable for the new food security challenges of the 21st century.”

Governments Advance Revision of Mediterranean Sustainable Development Strategy [viewed]

unep-map18 February 2015: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the France-based NGO Plan Bleu supported a regional conference in Malta, in which stakeholders and Parties to the Barcelona Convention reviewed a revised sustainable development strategy for the Mediterranean region. Participants considered six thematic areas of the revised Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD): seas and coasts; natural resources; rural development and food; climate; sustainable cities; transition towards a green economy; and governance.
