World Forum on Natural Capital Issues Open Letter to World Leaders [viewed]

unep_natural_capital27 November 2015: The 2nd World Forum on Natural Capital, held under the theme 'Solutions for a changing world,' discussed ways to help business and sustainability leaders identify the economic importance of protecting and restoring the natural environment. Delegates to the Forum were invited to sign a letter urging world leaders attending the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris “to acknowledge and address the fact that climate change cannot be tackled without halting the rapid erosion and loss of natural capital.”

FAO Tool Assesses Potential Impact of Climate Change on Livestock Breed Distribution [viewed]

Event: Land Day at UNFCCC COP 21 [viewed]

This one-day event will take place on the sidelines of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC, and will address the overall theme of ‘Land Degradation Neutrality as a solution to climate change'. A series of panel discussions will explore interlinkages between the achievement of land degradation neutrality (LDN) targets under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the mitigation of and adaptation to climate change. Specific sessions will address, among other topics: ecosystem based adaptation; evergreen agriculture and land restoration; ecological rainfall infrastructure: a new perspective on how forests and trees matter for climate; and ‘Desertification, Land degradation and Climate Change - Time to Act!' The event will also explore civil society contributions to LDN, including through the ‘4 per mill' initiative to spur a transition towards agroecology.

CGRFA Issues Guidelines for Integrating Genetic Resources in Adaptation Planning [viewed]

UNFCCC24 November 2015: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that Bahrain, Cuba, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Kuwait, South Sudan and Yemen have formally submitted their intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs), bringing the total number of Parties that have made their submissions to 177.

CBD Secretariat Reports on Priority Actions to Achieve Aichi Target on Coral Reefs [viewed]

aichi_biodiversityNovember 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released a report, titled ‘Priority Actions to Achieve Aichi Biodiversity Target 10 for Coral Reefs and Closely Associated Ecosystems.' By 2015, Aichi Target 10 aims to minimize anthropogenic pressures on coral reefs and other vulnerable ecosystems impacted by climate change or ocean acidification, to maintain their integrity and function.

Event: Farmers' Day at COP 21 [viewed]

Co-organized by the World Farmers' Organization (WFO) and the UNFCCC Secretariat, Farmers' Day will bring together participants from farming groups, researchers and civil society to discuss agriculture in light of the negotiations during the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP 21). The program includes panel discussions on the following issues:partnerships to improve agricultural resilience and productivity in a changing climate; partnering to scale-up climate-smart agriculture in Africa: from policy to tangible impact; and agroecology as a viable solution to create climate resilience and a sustainable food system.

CCAFS Outlines Six Steps to Climate-Smart Agriculture [viewed]

CCAFSNovember 2015: The CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) has pubished a booklet on six steps needed to achieve climate resilience in agriculture while also reducing agricultural emissions. Using examples from five years of CCAFS research, the booklet lays out how actions on disseminating technology, promoting insurance, delivering climate forecasts, enhancing national enabling environments, informing global policies and processes, and scaling up investments in climate smart-agriculture contribute to making the world's poorest farmers more climate resilient.

Business, Civil Society Leaders Call for Securing Ambitious Long-term Goal in Paris [viewed]

thebteam16 November 2015: A group of business and civil society leaders, led by the B Team, issued an open letter to Heads of State in support of an ambitious climate change agreement. In the letter, they request that the existing commitment by Parties to the UNFCCC to limit global average temperature increase to 2°C above pre-industrial levels be translated into an actionable long-term goal at the UN Paris Climate Change Conference.
