The 2012 Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will bring together ministers of finance and central bank governors from the institutions' 188 member countries, and provide a forum for civil society, the private sector, academics and others to engage in discussions on economic issues.
2 October 2012: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a publication on biodiversity loss in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), highlighting the state of biodiversity in the region particularly in the context of climate change, and presenting some outcomes of its biodiversity work funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
September 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released a report analyzing and summarizing some of the major issues related to biofuels and biodiversity on the basis of the best available scientific information.
September 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has published a study examining technical and regulatory matters on geoengineering in relation to the CBD. Circulated as CBD Technical Series No. 66, the study finds that there is no satisfactory climate geoengineering approach currently available, and that international law provides an incomplete basis for the governance of geoengineering.
September 2012: The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) Division for Sustainable Development (DSD) has released a report examining adaptation to climate change in sectors including water resources, coastal ecosystems and renewable energy. While this report focuses on Grenada, the broader project, “Integrating Climate Change into National Sustainable Development Strategies in Latin America and the Caribbean,” addresses primary concerns of small island developing States (SIDS).
1 October 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) announced that the Third Regional Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry, which convened on 28 September 2012, in Nadi, Fiji, endorsed the Pacific Islands Regional Policy Framework for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation and forest conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+).
27 September 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) have released a rapid response report on illegal logging. The report, titled “Green Carbon: Black Trade,” estimates that the illegal logging trade is worth between US$30-100 billion annually and hampers efforts related to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD).
The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet for its 64th session in London, UK, from 1-5 October 2012. Among other items, the MEPC will consider: matters relating to the implementation of energy efficiency, ballast water management and ship-recycling regulations; the designation of a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) in the North-eastern Caribbean area of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; market-based measures to address the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHGs); the availability of fuel oil to meet air pollution requirements; guidelines for the recycling of ships; and sewage treatment plant guidelines.
27 September 2012: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced it is providing US$600 million of loans to the Government of China for waste to energy, greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, and protection of wetlands projects.
26 September 2012: During the second day of the High-level Debate of the 67th session UN General Assembly (UNGA), several speakers expressed commitments to address climate change. Others expressed concerns about the effects of climate change on vulnerable States and highlighted the potential for climate change to contribute to conflicts.
