WMO-Backed Conference Plans for Year of Polar Prediction [viewed]

UNEP, CIFOR Publications Focus on REDD+ in Tanzania [viewed]

forests_ecosystemsJuly 2015: A report undertaken by the Tanzania Forest Services, in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) under the UN-REDD Programme, provides an economic rationale for Tanzania to invest in more sustainable use and conservation of its forest assets. Tanzania is the also focus of a publication by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), which outlines the rules and choices to be addressed by participatory countries in REDD+ activities and shows potential technical problems and related options.

Event: 2nd Africa Food Security and Adaptation Conference (AFSAC2) [viewed]

This conference will convene under the theme ‘Africa's Soil the New Frontier: Re-imagining Africa Food Security Now and into the Future under a Changing Climate'. The conference will explore how to sustainably tap into soil, one of Africa's key resources, in order to enhance food security and climate change resilience, while creating new employment opportunities for the continent's increasing youth population. Specific sessions will address a range of strategies to promote and transform ecosystem-based adaptation (EBA) driven agriculture in Africa, including how to: build scalable and inclusive business models; tap into innovative financing; involve women and youth more effectively; harness education, information and communication technology, and data; scale up EBA extension and knowledge services; incentivize private sector involvement; and contribute to increased South-South cooperation and capacity building. Building on the thematic discussions, the conference will focus on how to maximize policy frameworks and develop an action plan for implementing and scaling up EBA approaches and agro-value chains across Africa.

The conference is co-organized by the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN (FAO) and the African Union Commission (AUC), in collaboration with a range of partners from UN Agencies, international research and policy organizations, civil society networks and the private sector.

Poverty, Climate, Indicators in Focus of Stakeholder Input [viewed]

post2015July 2015: Civil society and other stakeholders issued policy briefs and articles with proposals and recommendations on the post-2015 development agenda and the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), addressing, inter alia: the multi-dimensional poverty index; indicators; follow-up and review; the June version of the post-2015 zero draft; and potential impacts of climate change on achieving the SDGs.

Singapore Submits INDC [viewed]

singapure3 July 2015: The Government of Singapore has formally submitted its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC) to the UNFCCC Secretariat, making it the 45th Party to do so. According to its submission, the country intends to achieve a 36% reduction in its 2005 emissions intensity by 2030. It also plans to stabilize its emissions levels, aiming to peak emissions by around 2030.

ITPGR Benefit-Sharing Project in India Identifies Climate-Resilient Crop Varieties [viewed]

ITPGR1 July 2015: The Benefit-Sharing Fund of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) has supported a project across several states in Northern India, with focus on screening varieties of rice and other crops for climate resilience and storing the material in newly established seed banks. The project was implemented by the civil society organization Gene Campaign, in collaboration with Bioversity International and with the participation of 25,000 farmers.

Living in a Changing Climate: EEA Reports [viewed]

Event: First Annual Forests and Livelihood: Assessment, Research and Engagement (FLARE) Network Conference [viewed]

The International Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI) research network, the Program on Forests (PROFOR), and the Musée de l'Homme Research Group on Social and Natural Evolution are convening this workshop to improve the assessment of forest governance approaches as a contribution to improved forest livelihoods, biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. The workshop will consider six themes: forest governance and landscapes, agricultural commodities, social and biological aspects of forest dependence, impact evaluations, pathways to prosperity, and climate variability and change.

UN-HABITAT Report Explores Climate Change, Urbanization in SIDS [viewed]

urbanization_climate_sidsMay 2015: A small island developing States (SIDS) urban agenda must reflect the cultural, economic and geographic characteristics of SIDS, in order to address sustainable urbanization in SIDS, according to a publication by the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT). The report provides an overview of current trends in climate change and urbanization, describes the impact of climate change on cities in SIDS, and explores the role of urban planning and design as a tool for addressing the challenges and opportunities of climate change in relation to human settlements in SIDS.
