October 2012: The latest Forest Newsletter of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) focuses attention on two workshops on the impacts of wood energy use and wood energy data reliability, as well as their Joint Wood Energy Enquiry, which provides information on the origin and amount of wood energy consumption.
In a few weeks, delegates from around the world will gather for the next UN climate change talks (COP 18) in Doha, Qatar, to chart the way forward on the modalities of adaptation. The changing climate is happening at an unprecedented rate and impacting a lot of people across the globe.[1] The rising sea levels, longer and more frequent droughts, heightened hurricane activity and floods are increasingly affecting livelihoods.
23 October 2012: Following the recent communication to the general public of a large-scale climate engineering experiment carried out in July 2012, Wendy Watson-Wright, Assistant Director General and Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has issued a response.
5 October 2012: The joint meeting of the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) initiative gathered academics, political decision makers, local administrators and private sector representatives to consider a methodological approach and scientific baseline for the valuation of land and land-based ecosystem services in the course of the ELD initiative.
22 October 2012: The eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted 33 decisions on a range of strategic, substantive, administrative, financial and budgetary issues. On climate change-related issues, the meeting adopted decisions on REDD+ and geo-engineering, and addressed strengthening knowledge on linkages between biodiversity and climate change.
18 October 2012: On its final day, the Rio Conventions Pavilion at the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Hyderabad, India, convened to discuss the way towards integrated implementation of the Rio Conventions.
16 October 2012: The UN Collaborative Programme on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (UN-REDD) has released a policy brief on achieving benefits beyond carbon sequestration from investments in reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+).
16 October 2012: The Rio Conventions Pavilion at the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Hyderabad, India, convened for REDD+ Day on 16 October 2012.
16 October 2012: The UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee convened a special event on “Conceptualizing a Set of Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs) at UN Headquarters in New York, US, on 16 October 2012. The event served as an initial opportunity for participants to discuss the SDGs, in light of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) outcome decision to develop a proposal for SDGs to be considered during the UNGA's 68th session.
15 October 2012: The Rio Conventions Pavilion at the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Hyderabad, India, convened for Land Day, the sixth such day-long event focused on sustainable development and land issues.
