The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will engage in a mid-term review of the implementation of the Strategic Plan and the Aichi targets. The theme of the meeting will be 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.' The Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP MOP 7) will take place immediately before COP 12.
2 November 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), conducted a capacity building workshop on national level implementation of synergies among the Rio Conventions (CBD, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)).
5 November 2012: In meetings of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee, Member States called for increased efforts to address agriculture and food security in the international development agenda, stressing that climate change exacerbates food security concerns.
5 November 2012: A new report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) finds that two-thirds of the poor individuals raising livestock are women, and that they play an important role in maintaining indigenous breeds.
5 November 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Kenya Forest Service have launched a report on the impacts of deforestation on the Kenyan economy. The report, which is titled “The Role and Contribution of Montane Forests and Related Ecosystem Services to the Kenyan Economy,” quantifies the negative effects of deforestation and formulates recommendations, including mainstreaming payment for ecosystem services.
1 November 2012: The Pilot Country Meetings for the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) met from 30 October-1 November 2012, in Istanbul, Turkey, in association with the CIF 2012 Partnership Forum, which meets on 6-7 November 2012. The Pilot Country Meetings provided the opportunity for those working on CIF-financed operations to discuss progress and experiences in an open and collaborative manner.

2 November 2012: The 34th Consultative Meeting of States parties to the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter, 1972 (London Convention), and to its 1996 Protocol (London Protocol), concluded with the release of an unanimous statement of concern regarding a reported incident of deliberate ocean fertilization activity off the west coast of Canada.
November 2012: The October issue of the UN Development Programme's (UNDP) quarterly Adaptation Bulletin features articles on: supporting climate change adaptation in Armenia and Albania; and training Asian government officials to internalize the economics of adaptation into national investment and planning decisions.
25 October 2012: A news alert released by the EU Directorate-General of the Environment (DG-Environment) explores the annual average global annual decline of seagrass beds by 1.5% since 1900, which is now accelerating, noting they are an important carbon sink.
