Fourth GEOSS Asia-Pacific Symposium Focuses on Climate and Biodiversity [viewed]

March 2010: The Fourth Asia-Pacific Symposium of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) was held in Bali, Indonesia, from 10-12 March 2010. Organized by the GEO Secretariat with the support of the Governments of Indonesia and Japan, the Symposium welcomed approximately 220 participants from 26 countries, and was organized around the theme "Towards a Global Earth Observation System of Systems that supports the societal benefit areas of climate and biodiversity."

Italy Contributes to Benefit Sharing Fund of Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources [viewed]

21 May 2010: Italy announced a contribution of 1.2 million euros to the benefit sharing scheme managed by the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, a multilateral environmental agreement (MEA) established under the framework of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

CBD SBSTTA 14 Adopts Climate-Related Recommendations [viewed]

21 May 2010: The 14th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 14) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) convened from 10-21 May 2010, in Nairobi, Kenya. SBSTTA 14 adopted 18 recommendations to be considered by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the CBD. Climate-related issues are addressed in the recommendations on: mountain biodiversity; inland waters; marine and coastal biodiversity, including ocean fertilization; protected areas; biodiversity and climate change; biofuels and biodiversity; and forest biodiversity.

UNEP-WCMC Launches Global Island Database [viewed]

10 May 2010: The UN Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) launched the Global Island Database (GID) during the small island developing States (SIDS) Day held during the 18th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) in New York, US, on 10 May 2010. The GID reflects five of the themes important for islands, as identified by the Island Biodiversity Programme of Work (IBPoW) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), namely biodiversity, climate change, invasive species, pollution and sustainability.

Event: Multilateral Treaty Framework: An invitation to universal participation [viewed]

This event will take place from 21–23 and 27–28 September 2010. This treaty event will coincide with the general debate of the 65th session of the General Assembly. It provides an opportunity for States to demonstrate their continuing commitment to the central role of the rule of law in international relations. This year's event will highlight treaties of global reach such as human rights, terrorism, penal matters, disarmament, climate change and the protection of UN personnel. In particular, this year will highlight a theme that celebrates and safeguards life on Earth, \"Biodiversity.\" 2010 marks the International Year of Biodiversity; it also marks the start of the UN Decade for Deserts and the Fight against Desertification, another global issue requiring a global response.

Event: UNGA High-Level Event on Biodiversity [viewed]

UNESCO's Executive Board Welcomes Initiative on Climate Change [viewed]

30 April 2010: The 184th session of the Executive Board of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) took place in Paris, France, from 30 March-15 April 2010. Among other agenda items, the Board took note of UNESCO's ongoing work on climate change and welcomed the new Initiative on Climate Change, which will give special attention to UNESCO's two global priorities, Africa and gender equality, as well as to the increased vulnerability of small island developing States (SIDS).

UNFCCC Secretariat Publishes Report on Collaborative Activities [viewed]

14 May 2010:The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a report (FCCC/SBSTA/2010/INF.1) that provides an overview of some of the collaborative activities, initiatives and programmes that the Secretariat is engaged in with UN entities, convention secretariats and intergovernmental organizations in order to facilitate an effective international response to climate change.
